Boatmen sunk!

Saturday 17th August 2019, The BetVictor Southern League – Division One South Attendance 128

Mangotsfield United….3 Sholing…0

Manager Ollie Price was given a great start to the new campaign, as his new-look Mangotsfield Utd ran out comfortable winners over a strong Sholing side.

The Southampton- based side started their season last week with an FA Cup win against Tadley Calleva, but they were swept side by some strong performances, as several new Mangotsfield signings started in irresistible fashion.

None moreso than Tom Hillman, who opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Known for his dead-ball kicks, he planted a stunning 25 yard free-kick well beyond the reach of 'Boatmen' keeper Ryan Gosney.

Moments later, the hosts were hit by an injury to Sekani Simpson, with new boy Lewis Dix slotting in well. Mangotsfield were taking the game to Sholing with the pace of Hillman & Dan Demkiv very prominent.

The Boatmen came back well towards the break and tested keeper Marko Radovanovic with several opportunities, but he dealt comfortably with them all. Dangerous free-kicks came from Alex Sawyer, one of which was headed over by Byron Mason.

After the interval, Sholing were again looking dangerous, with Daniel Mason going close, but they were caught out on the break by Hillman, and following his clever mazy run, Demkiv, slotted home the second goal from close range, in the 65th minute.

The third goal, after 77 minutes, was started by a clever headed flick-on by Lee Hartshorn. Hillman showed a clean pair of heels to find his way to the edge of the box, to push the ball across the area to the incoming Demkiv, and he sealed victory with a low drive.

If 'The Field' can continue in this sort of form, then their long-suffering fans can hope for better things ahead.
