Heavy defeat at The Corinium
Monday 22nd April 2019, The Evo-Stik League South – Division One South Attendance 301
Cirencester Town….6 Mangotsfield United….1
Report by Ron Loftus
Perhaps not unsurprisingly a tough away fixture on a ' plastic ' pitch against the side who are the leading goalscorers across all FOUR Southern League divisions AND who still had the motivation to try and finish high enough to earn a home tie in the end-of-season play-offs was always going to be a tough ' ask '.
With the ' Field having secured their place in the league as a result of those three consecutive victories this was a step too far against a side I rate as the best I have seen this season and are surely destined to return to the Premier division. However, we made a positive start and were competitive for the first 20-25 mins. and even managed to get our noses in front after 13 mins. when the ever-willing Dan Demkiv got free down the right reaching the bye-line before pulling the ball back to Matty Tanner who slotted home from 10 yds. 0-1.
Our hosts soon were back on terms when their good use of their wide players saw a break on the left before a low , hard cross was met at the back post by Alan Griffin whose shot went in off the foot of Clayton Fortune. It soon became 2-1 when another low cross from the left found Tommy Anderson who struck home. We failed to learn from our errors and on the stroke of half-time it became 3-1 after yet another swift attack down the flanks was converted by Anderson again to give us a mountain to climb.
We kept the rampant home side out until the 80th minute largely due to some inspired goalkeeping by Marko Radovanovic and some wayward finishing with shots flying in from all angles. Once the score became 4-1 though it was something of a ' shooting gallery ' for the final ten minutes and further goals from Jack Freeman after 87 and 90 mins. gave a more realistic look to the scoreline. We tired badly towards the end of the game and can have no complaints about the final result. We have the opportunity to finish what has been a tough season for all concerned and a massive learning curve with one final home fixture against AFC Totton next Saturday.
Good luck and let's hope we can end on a winning note as everybody has a well-earned rest before we go again next season. ONWARDS AND UPWARDS !!
