Slimbridge AFC …1 Mangotsfield United…8
Match report by Ron Loftus
I thought I best get this brief report of today's game done early as I am sure there will be people out there who will be thinking the result was perhaps a misprint. !! However I can confirm that as a result of an outstanding , all-round team performance with a display of superb attacking football, the 'Field did record an emphatic victory at relegation rivals Slimbridge today!!
With an unchanged line-up after last week’s excellent win at Thatcham, we tore into the home side from the off. Another solid back-line of Simpson, Fortune, Kearney and Tanner were rarely tested and with a brilliant midfield using the wide open spaces of an excellent playing surface to supply the speedy flank boys - Demkiv ,Ollis and Hillman and with Lee Hartshorn providing a physical presence up top, Slimbridge just couldn't cope.
We opened the scoring after 12mins when a mazy run by Tom Hillman from left to right saw him play the ball to Dan Demkiv cutting in from the right and he let fly from 20yards out with his shot taking a slight deflection before flashing past Adams in the hom e goal(0-1). Just 3 mins later it was 2-0 as Ollis got free down the left before pulling the ball back to the edge of the box for Demkiv to fire home his second(0-2).
There was no let up for our hosts as on 23mins a corner from the right found Kearney at the back post and he shot across the keeper into the far corner(0-3) The game was effectively over after half an hour when Tom Hillman’s corner was powerfully headed home by Hartshorn into the top right corner.(0-4). Although it was hardly needed, Slimbridge gifted the fifth goal to us just before the interval when a throw-in from their right-back was volleyed clear by keeper Lewis Adams but only to Ollis some 35 yds out, who himself volleyed it straight back into the unguarded net!! (0-5)
The second half saw the usual raft of substitutions with Slimbridge making all three changes at the half-time interval. However the ' Field made it 0-6 on 52 mins when Chris Peck stooped low to head home a near post corner. On 58 mins the goal-rush continued as Demkiv got free down the left before setting up Hartshorn who sidefooted home from 15 yds(0-7) A rare error between Colin Mugoya and keeper Radovanovic allowed our hosts to grab a consolation before Demkiv completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot after a comedy of errors in the home area saw him pulled down by the keeper after Tyrone Tucker Dixon somehow failed to score after rounding the keeper only to see his shot blocked on the line by a prostrate defender(1-8).
There was a loss of discipline towards the end of the match which saw 4 yellow cards (3 to Slimbridge) issued in the final 12 mins but nothing could spoil a euphoric afternoon for the travelling support who have waited so long for a performance like this !! A huge 'well done' to every single player, Ollie and all the coaching staff for gaining their rewards for a season-long effort and sticking by the players who repaid their faith in bucketloads today. Onwards and upwards !!!
