Mangotsfield United….0 Bideford AFC…2
Deadline-day signings Marko Radovanovic & Keith Kearney made their debut, but a strong Bideford side were always ahead of Mangotsfield, in most departments. They were quicker to the ball, picked up the second ball, won the aerial battles and were defensively strong against a Mangotsfield attack, strangely lacking in creativity.
However, it was the hosts who almost took an early lead, after just two minutes, when Tom Hillman cut in from the left flank and from the edge of the area, pulled his drive across the goalmouth, but wide of the far post. Bideford broke quickly and the always dangerous Sean Downing, saw his low drive stopped by the diving Marko Radovanovic. Then our other new signing, Keith Kearney excelled with a sliding tackle to rob Billy Tucker as he seemed poised to score.
Tom Hillman turned his full-back to power in a drive towards the near post, but Robins keeper Joe Moore did well to save with his legs, giving us a corner.
Bideford took the lead in the 21st minute. From a corner, Tom Hillman’s weak clearance only found Billy Tucker, and his fierce drive took a slight deflection as it flew over the outstretched arms of Marko Radovanovic. 0-1.
The Robins powered forward again and James Mayne almost increased Bideford’s lead, when he climbed above the Mango defence to send a strong header just beyond the far post.
In the 44th minute, The Robins found the net again. Again it was James Mayne with a similar header across the box and Toby Down sneaked around the back at the far post to nod the ball home. 0-2.
Marko Radovanovic almost gave another away as his miscued clearance fell directly to a Bideford forward, but he redeemed himself by smothering the striker’s attempt.
Despite raising their game slightly after the break, the hosts never really troubled The Robins, and seemed short on ideas. Dan Demkiv blasted over the top from 12 yards, following a good ball from Tyrone Tucker-Dixon, but generally Bideford held firm. They might have added to their tally late on when Billy Tucker tested Marko Radovanovic with an outswinging volley and in injury time, the keeper did well to hold Sean Downing’s low drive.
With four minutes remaining, Bideford introduced substitute Jordan Ricketts, who of course, started the campaign with us, playing just two games.
