Mangotsfield United….3 Larkhall Athletic…1
This will prove a vital three points in the battle against relegation, especially on the day when the two basement boys, Barnstaple & Fleet were meeting in North Devon. Several selections by Manager Ollie Price, proved successful, as Mangos enjoyed a strong & dominant second-half.
The Larks started strongly, with the wind at their backs. Alex Lambert saw his header clip the crossbar, & Mike Baker tried his luck from distance. Lewis Powell was unfortunate when he met a cross from Harry Hope, but saw his diving header come back off the bar. Mitchell Page hit a fierce volley which struck keeper Joe Perry in the chest, and the rebound was hacked away. Lewis Powell then received a dangerous ball from the left but as he was poised to pull the trigger, Clayton Fortune’s superb sliding tackle robbed him of the opportunity.
However, in the 24th minute, and against the general run of play, Mangos took the lead with a well flighted free-kick from 20 yards by Tom Hillman. He has shown in recent games that he has a talent for dead-ball kicks! 1-0.
Larkhall responded with a strong low drive by Josh Jones, which was marginally close, and Lewis Powell was also near to scoring when he quickly turned and sent in a snap-shot, which just cleared the bar.
Tyrone Tucker-Dixon made a good run down the left and sent in a low ball into the box, only for a ‘Larks defender to intercept, just before it reached Dan Demkiv.
The hosts could not have made a better start to the second-half, when they increased their lead in the 49th minute . Dan Demkiv ran onto a through ball down the left flank and he cut inside to lob the ball over the advancing Larkhall keeper, Shaun Semmens. 2-0.
They were taking the advantage of having the wind behind them, and it was substitute Sam Hill, on his return to the team, who made the game safe in the 64th minute, when he headed home the third goal, off the inside of the far post. 3-0.
Larkhall were still a threat but the hosts trio of Clayton Fortune, Colin Mugoya-Tabingwa & Sekani Simpson worked hard to contain them.
Lewis Powell, always a threat, fired in a strong volley from a tight angle, but keeper Joe Perry did well to block the shot with his legs.
With four minutes left, ‘The Larks’ grabbed a consolation through captain Mike Baker, who rose above the defence to power home a header. 3-1.
