Barnstaple Town …2 Mangotsfield United…2
Match report by Ron Loftus
In one of the few areas to escape the recent snowfall in the south-west, the ' Field missed a golden opportunity to widen the gap at the foot of the table against basement-dwellers Barnstaple today. Some slipshod defending and the inability to convert any of a number of gilt-edged goalscoring chances meant just a point was taken when all three were there for the taking.
With a swirling wind on a bumpy playing surface it took the first 10-15 minutes for us to settle down and we were probably a little fortunate not to concede in that opening spell. As the half wore on we began to exploit the width down the flanks with both James Ollis and Matty Tanner finding space and Louis Britton battling hard down the centre. On 23mins. a short corner routine on the left saw the ball laid back to Tanner just inside the area but instead of taking a touch he chose to try a first-time effort with a complete air-shot the outcome ! Five minutes later a low-driven free-kick from just outside the right-hand edge of the area from Luke Spokes went agonisingly past the post with the ' keeper beaten. On 32 minutes Matty Tanner created a chance when he robbed a central defender but with just Oliver in the home goal to beat he struck his shot straight at the home custodian. On the stroke of half-time, Ollis went around the left-back and squared the ball acr oss the area for Louis Britton to fire home.
A well-worked move early in the second period saw Sekani Simpson combine with Luke Spokes who worked his way towards goal before firing a powerful shot against the bar . A second goal then may well have settled matters but we then shot ourselves in the foot by losing possession at the back allowing Barnstaple ' s No.9, Jack Rice-Lethaby to poke the ball home from close range.(1-1).
Louis Britton restored our lead on 65mins.when he converted a through ball from James Ollis with the aid of a slight deflection (1-2). Ollis himself had two one-on-one chances with the first being a chip over the advancing keeper which unfortunately also cleared the bar and then the home custodian bravely blocked a close-range effort. With just 10 mins to go we were caught out by a long ball across field to the left and right-back Soloman Wheatley was able to run free on goal before slipping the ball past Perry as he advanced. A point apiece then when we really should have had more!
