AFC Totton…2 Mangotsfield United…1
Match report by Ron Loftus
After the recent heavy defeats against Winchester and Cirencester, at least we witnessed a more evenly-contested and competitive fixture down in Hampshire on Saturday.
With the unavailability for selection, of Sonnie Low, Ryan Gissing and Jordan Williams, we saw the arrival of James Ollis on loan from Bath City and Lee Hartshorn (ex-Bradford Town among others !)
Our hosts were quick out of the blocks and we conceded after just 7 mins. when a free-kick from the right was headed against the bar with home centre-back Jack Smith quickest to react to the loose ball to give Totton an early lead. Our back-line came under pressure from the fast raiding home team but we could have drawn level when a move down the left saw the ball worked across the 18-yard line before Luke Spokes put James Ollis through on the right. Unfortunately his first-time effort sailed over the bar when perhaps he had more time than he realised to take a touch before shooting.
However it remained 0-1 at half-time.
We started positively in the second period and when Ollis created space on the left his excellent low cross into the 6-yard box was somehow missed by two incoming players letting our hosts off the hook. Almost inevitably Totton went direct with a long ball over the top of a leaden-footed Mangotsfield defence for the ultra-quick Craig Feeney to calmly lob the ball over the advancing Hodges to make it 0-2.
Our reponse was almost immediate however, when one of a number of excellent crosses from wide on the the left by the returning James Bloom was met at the backpost by Dan Demkiv whose header put us back into the game.
Thereafter most of the action was played out in midfield with neither side able to create much in the way of decent goalscoring chances.
We have to battle on and hope some long overdue good fortune comes our way!!
