Tuesday 1st January 2019, The Evo-Stik League South – Division One South Attendance 171
Mangotsfield United….1 Cirencester Town…5
Mangotsfield’s record against ‘The Centurions’ in recent times has not been great, but this was the second time that Cirencester have won 5-1 at Cossham Street,(2003/04) and ‘The Field’s heaviest defeat of this campaign. New signing, Kevin Davies from Paulton Rovers, started, as Chris Peck was injured and Miles John, Jake Thomas & Clayton Fortune were unavailable. Theo Llewellyn was suffering with illness and Bristol Rovers loanee Jamie Bremner was recalled by ‘The Gas’. On a positive note, Louis Britton was recalled from Brislington, and scored.
The game was effectively over by half-time as ‘The Centurions’ hit four first-half goals, leaving the hosts shell-shocked and it was an ex-Mango, Alan Griffin, who started the blitz after 28 minutes when he popped up at the far post to volley home with the defence floundering. 0-1.
Within two minutes, the scoreline was doubled as the speedy Ben Whitehead raced through a static defence to slide the ball home. 0-2.
There was some respite for the hosts after 35 minutes when Louis Britton took advantage of a defensive mix-up between keeper Mateusz Wieczorek and himself to lob home an easy chance from the edge of the box, 1-2.
But that was it as two more strikes before the break condemned ‘The Field’ to a difficult second period. Aidan Bennett curled an audacious lob into the far corner, beyond the reach of keeper Kieran Hodges in the 38th minute, and in first-half stoppage time, Tommy Anderson was gifted the time and space to fire home from around the penalty spot. 1-4.
HT: 1-4
The second-half was a formality as Cirencester controlled the game and added to their score with a superb 25 yarder from Jack Freeman in the 78th minute. 1-5.
Mangotsfield rarely created an opportunity despite putting the pressure on but Cirencester dealt with everything comfortably.
