Mangotsfield United….2 Slimbridge AFC…3
Mangos started this game with two new loan signings. Jamie Bremner of Bristol Rovers in central defence and Joseph Hall of Bristol City on the bench, but within five minutes, they were a goal down. It was Joe Noakes, who played for us a season or so back, who did the damage. Mark Magee had given early warning with a volley which just flew over the top, and then a superbly lofted corner found Noakes who scored with a diving header. His bravery saw him injured with a cut to the head in the process and we was subbed minutes later. 0-1.
The hosts had little time to process what was happening when Slimbridge struck again five minutes later. Ewan Dunbar found space down the right, and his cross towards the near post struck keeper Kieran Hodges in the chest and bounced down to Mark Magee, who had the easiest of chances to score from 3 yards. 0-2.
Mangotsfield pulled a goal back in the 28th minute through Sonnie Low, who was a former Slimbridge player, and his drive, all along the ground, gave Swans keeper Lewis Adams no chance. 1-2.
The Mangotsfield feelgood factor did not last too long. Just two minutes in fact, as ‘Swans increased their lead as Dan King found William Hawes in the box and his neat overhead kick deceived everyone. 1-3.
The hosts enjoyed a better second period, and put pressure on Slimbridge. In the 55th minute, Dan Demkiv saw his header go just the wrong side of the post, and then just ten minutes later, Clayton Fortune was almost given a gift by the ‘Swans keeper Lewis Adams.
Clayton Fortune was put through but Adams smothered the ball, then spilled it at Fortune’s feet. Just as the big man was about to shoot, Adams reclaimed the ball. Sonnie Low then gave his own keeper an anxious moment as he sent a header back towards his own goal, only to find the Kieran Hodges had come off his line. Hodges scrambled back to clear.
With five minutes left, Matty Tanner found the top corner with a superb screamer from 25 yards and their was a nervy remaining five minutes or so for Slimbridge as they snuffed out any further chances. 2-3.
Once again, Mangos had slipped to a narrow defeat but that first ten minutes had proved costly.
