Once again, Mangotsfield were missing several players with Michael Bryant, Luke Spokes & Sam Hill unavailable, Kyle Tooze was starting a 3 match ban and Lewis Ellington injured. New signing, Harry Rutty made his debut in the centre of defence and Clayton Fortune returned after suspension.
The Worthians showed why they have started the season so well and were well organised defensively, but in the opening spell, the hosts had three good chances, which could have changed the outcome. They all fell to Clayton Fortune, who unfortunately saw two strong close-range volleys blocked and a header shave the post.
However, the visitors looked dangerous, especially on the right flank where Toumani Sidibe’s pace was causing problems. He curled a volley towards the far post which keeper Kieran Hodges was alert enough to save, and another surging run saw his low cross just fail to connect. Wayne Turk planted a header wide of the far post. Ryan Stanners fired wide and Ashan Holgate went close.
The Mangotsfield defence were working hard to contain them, but were unable to pose any real threat themselves, despite the hard running of Louis Britton and Adam Kelly. As the half-time whistle came, it was fairly even, but the hosts needed a spark.
Highworth made an early change in the second-half with the introduction of Matty Grabe, and almost on the hour, they made the breakthrough. A long crossfield ball found Sidibe on the right wing and he outstripped his marker to burst into the box and plant a low ball past keeper Kieran Hodges. 0-1.
The introduction of Miles John & Ryan Gissing gave the hosts some new impetus but they found the Highworth rearguard difficult to break down and so the poor run continues, with the highlight on our home record.
One bright note was the introduction of Chris Peck at 82 minutes. He never had long to make a mark, but he has been injured since pre-season and was Manager Ollie Price’s first signing of the new campaign. In the little time he had, he showed enough to suggest he may be the influential midfielder the team needs.
