Kingfishers edge home
Saturday 17th November 2018, The Evo-Stik League South – Division One South Attendance 104
Mangotsfield United…1 Thatcham Town…2
A weakened Mangos side, missing Clayton Fortune, Kyle Tooze, Michael Rimmer and with injured Sekani Simpson on the bench, put up solid resistance against Thatcham and deserved a point, but an excellent free-kick condemned them to defeat, their 7th at home this season, in all competitions.
The Kingfishers made the early running with Shane Cooper-Clark and Ekow Elliott always looking a threat and had it not been for an outstretched leg from keeper Kieran Hodges, denying Cooper-Clark, they could have been behind at an early stage.
The hosts made little impression up front before falling behind in the 25th minute. A cross in from the left flank was met by Ekow Elliott and he swept the ball home from about 10 yards. 0-1.
Elliott made ground down the left moments later and almost had a second as his ball across the face of the goal was not far off the far post.
Clearly needing a spark, ‘The Field’ made a brighter start to the second-half. Luke Spokes found Sonnie Low with a well-flighted cross but his effort was well wide. A Thatcham free-kick clipped the base of the post but the hosts levelled with a goal from Jake Thomas – his first for the club. His left-footed low drive from the right-hand side of the box, caught the Kingfishers defence and keeper Paul Strudley, flat-footed. 1-1.
The Field stepped up their game and continued to play a neat passing game. A low volley by Jordan Williams was held by keeper Paul Strudley and a snap shot from Michael Bryant was deflected for a corner.
Jordan Williams again tried his luck from distance and a terrific 30 yarder from Sam Hill almost caught out keeper Strudley, who managed to push the ball over the top. A deep cross from Sonnie Low found Michael Bryant, but his forceful header was a fraction too high.
But the visitors were always dangerous and it was another curling effort from Ekow Elliott which almost sneaked in as his effort veered away from the far post.
With 15 minutes left, Thatcham were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box. Lewis Coyle found the net with a superb shot which keeper Kieran Hodges probably never saw in the deepening gloom. 1-2.
One late chance fell to the Mangos, when Louis Britton headed wide, when well placed with five minutes left.
