Mangotsfield United…1 Street FC…2
Mangotsfield are still searching for that elusive home win, and whilst their performance deserved something from this game, they fell to a late goal which keeps newly-promoted Street in the leading positions. The Somerset side created the better openings throughout, and they could have been well ahead by the break had it not been for keeper Andrew Hannah.
‘The Field started well enough with Kye Simpson on target and Sekani Simpson going close from distance, but Street keeper Tom Punchard’s handling was always safe. He blocked snap drives from Kyle Tooze and Kye Simpson, but it was at the other end where most of the action occurred. Hannah twice foiled attempts from Ed Butcher and a 20 yard volley from Ross McErlain. Defenders Sekani Simpson & Colin Mugoya-Tabingwa found themselves under constant pressure.
However, it was the hosts who opened the scoring in the 35th minute following a defensive error by McErlain, & Louis Britton was quick to take advantage by lifting the ball over Punchard and rolling it into the empty net. 1-0.
On the stroke of half-time, ‘The Cobblers’ were level, thanks to a downward header from Dave O’Hare, from an accurate cross by Phil Ormrod. Hannah managed to get a hand on it, but it was not enough. 1-1.
There were fewer chances for either side after the break, but just on the hour, Street introduced former Mango favourite, Lewis Hogg, and with about 15 minutes remaining, the visitors stepped up the pressure. Mangotsfield had already lost Sekani Simpson to injury three minutes into the half, and had to re-adjust. Tom Punchard made a superb one-handed save to keep out a header from Kye Simpson, but in the 80th minute, Street grabbed the winner. Matt Hurley swept an impressive pass across field, and substitute Harry Foster had the pace to outstrip the defence on the right-hand side, and as Hannah came out to narrow the angle, Foster slotted the ball home under the keeper. 1-2.
