Citizens take the points
Saturday 18th August 2018, The Evo-Stik League South – Division One South Attendance 150
Mangotsfield United…1 Winchester City…2
Perhaps it was down to a little more experience, but ‘The Citizens’ took the points with an improved second-half performance, whilst ‘The Mangos’ looked back on several wasted opportunities. A fairly even first-half, with the hosts having the better of the chances, but lacking the cutting edge, saw a goal-less scoreline at the break.
Michael Bryant went close with a low 20 yarder which was only just wide of the right-hand post & Jordan Ricketts sidefooted wide after being set-up by Kye Simpson. A free-kick found Ollie Price on the edge of the area but his header was off-target. Kye Simpson had a fine chance when he managed to beat keeper Ryan Pryce, but his inside pass was blocked.
Kyle Tooze saw his low drive safely held by Pryce, and a good run down the left by Kye Simpson ended when he stumbled as he shaped to shoot. At this point Winchester had rarely troubled new keeper Cameron Clarke.
Winchester started the second period with a more determined look and Jake Rawkins broke down the left, but his volley was well over the top.
It was Colin Mugoya-Tabingwa, on his debut, who gave the hosts the lead after 54 minutes when he flicked the ball home from around 6 yards, as it had been played across the box. 1-0.
Cameron Clarke had to go full length to his left to thwart a low drive as ‘The Citizens’ looked to step up a gear, and it was no real surprise, when they levelled in the 59th minute. As the ball bounced around the area, with several Mangotsfield defenders failing to clear the ball, Oli Bailey stabbed the ball home. 1-1.
Both sides made substitutions with Jordan Williams and new signing Caelen Simpson coming on and It was still anyone’s game. A decent cross from Jordan Ricketts found Kyle Tooze, but his drive was blocked, and Kye Simpson managed to slide the ball across the vacant area but there was no one there who could reach it.
A teasing cross from Kyle Tooze just missed the far post, whilst Winchester broke and Joe Cook tried his luck from distance. However with just nine minutes remaining, ‘The Citizens’ grabbed the winner through Tyrell Mitford, whose low drive through a crowded area beat the possibly unsighted Cameron Clarke. 1-2.
In hindsight, a lack of a cutting edge and the giving away of two sloppy goals proved to be Mangotsfield’s downfall.
