Mangos win at Plain Ham
Thursday 5th April 2018, The Evo-Stik League South – West Division. Attendance 105
Larkhall Athletic….0 Mangotsfield United…2
Report by Ron Loftus
Missisng Connor Jones and Adam Kelly – both unavailable – and with Alex Monks suspended, Ollie Price’s resources were stretched to the limit as acquaintances were renewed with many old ‘friends’ at Larkhall on Thursday evening. With Phil Bater in charge of our hosts, nearly half of his side had featured in the maroon and sky at Cossham Street in times gone by, whilst several of our current squad were former ‘Larks’.
On a cool, clear night, the playing surface – while appearing in good condition – was deceptively heavy, (no surprise considering the weather of late), and the occasional uneven bounce of the ball, caught out players from both teams in a largely forgettable first 45 minutes. After 12 minutes, a direct free-kick saw Larkhall’s Matt Britton denied by George Dorrington, going full-length to his left to push the shot wide. Larkhall were enjoying the greater share of possession as Mangotsfield missed the ball-winning capabilities of Alex Monks in midfield. Several decent opportunities were wasted by the home team with some wayward shooting.
After 35 minutes, Ed Weeks turned awkwardly and collapsed to the ground, before being stretchered off, with what is suspected to be a serious knee injury, and the half drew to a close with the scoreline still blank.
Just two minutes into the second period, Larkhall introduced former ‘Field’ favourite Neil Arndale to the fray, but hgis tenure lasted all of five minutes, as he was shown a straight red card, being the ‘last man’ as Kye Simpson looked certain to open the ‘Field’s’ account as he outstripped the home rearguard, only to be tripped from behind. The sending-off allowed the visitors to dominate the game with Kyle Tooze causing problems throughout with his direct running at defenders.
It was no surprise when ‘The Field’ took the lead after 62 minutes, as a swift break down the right flank saw the ball pulled back to Michael Bryant some 25 yards out and his composed finish into the bottom right-hand corner, whistled past the motionless Shaun Semmens in the Larkhall goal. (1-0).
Soon after, Dorrington bravely saved at the feet of Alex Lambert, when Tom Warren lost possession on the edge of the area. Mangotsfield were now opening up a tiring home defence on numerous occasions, and on 78 minutes, Kyle Tooze bamboozled defenders on the left before setting up Jordan Williams on the corner of the penalty area. His sweetly-struck curling left-foot effort found its way into the top right-hand corner via the underside of the crossbar to increase the ‘Field’s’ advantage. (2-0).
Thereafter the game petered out with three more points – and the ‘double’ over our hosts – returning to Cossham Street.
