Match Report by Ron Loftus
A confident, attack-minded Mangotsfield side made a flying start to the game in North Devon on Tuesday night as the front-line of Kye and Kane Simpson ably supported by Kyle Tooze, got in behind the Bideford rearguard on several occasions during the opening 15-20 minutes . In fact we could have taken the lead inside the first minute when a long ball forward saw the home ‘keeper, Steve Oliver, rush out to block Kye Simpson only for the ball to rebound to Kyle Tooze some 35 yards from goal but his long-range attempt sailed over the crossbar with the net gaping!
The ‘Field were passing the ball well, prompted by Mike Bryant in midfield and it seemed only a matter of time before we found the back of the net. Almost inevitably, in virtually their first serious attack, the home side took the lead on 26m. when a free-kick played into the box from wide on the right bounced around the area before finding the unmarked Craig Allen who gleefully shot home from close range.(0 – 1).
On 31m. Kye Simpson played a low cross into the box, but brother Kane somehow contrived to miss the ball completely when it appeared easier to score! It was then Kyle Tooze ‘ s turn to get around the Bideford left-back before his superb cross was met powerfully by the head of Mike Bryant only for his effort to go wide of the right-hand post when he probably should have put the sides level.
However, the half ended with the visitors still a single goal in arrears.
A determined ‘Field side were soon back in the match - and how !! On 52m. Jordan Williams broke quickly down the left touchline before playing a low ball across goal where the alert Kane Simpson deftly flicked the ball to the left of bemused home custodian, Steve Oliver, into the far corner.(1 – 1). Just a further 5mins. elapsed before Kyle Tooze on the right crossed into the area where the home defence were only able to partially clear the ball to the edge of the box where the lurking Sam Hill drove powerfully home from 20 yards to put us ahead.(2 – 1).
The home team were now on the ropes and on the hour mark Kye Simpson broke clear on the left before crossing low across the 6-yard box for brother Kane to supply the coup-de-grace at the back post ! (3 – 1). To their credit, Bideford immediately made a double substitution with Exeter City loanee Max Smallcombe and striker Ryan Turner joining the fray. The fresh legs made an immediate impact with the home team’s Joshua Key reducing the arrears on 62m. (3 – 2).
The momentum was now with our hosts as the effort put in earlier in the game by the visitors began to take its toll. Just 10mins. remained when a tiring ‘Field rearguard were unable to clear the ball and a Bideford forward went down under pressure from the defence and a penalty awarded. Ben Seymour was able to draw the sides level from the spot.(3 – 3). Chances appeared at either end and right at the death Kyle Tooze created an opening for himself but his tired shot lacked the strength to trouble Oliver in the home goal. It was perhaps a measure of the improvement shown in recent weeks that, come the final whistle, we were slightly disappointed not to have taken all 3 points against another of the promotion-chasing sides.
Surely it is now only a matter of time before Caretaker Boss Ollie Price and his team are offered the job on a more permanent basis !!
