Barnstaple Town...1 Mangotsfield United...1
Points shared at Mill Road
Tuesday 6th February 2018, The Evo-Stik League South – West Division. Attendance 65
Barnstaple Town Town….1 Mangotsfield United…1
With thanks to Mike Hamilton & Dan Carter
The signing of Michael Bryant was a big boost to Manager Ollie Price ahead of this game, as he was looking to cover the loss of Josh Nelmes & Simon Gilbert, and add some firepower to his misfiring attack. There was also a return of another Mangotsfield favourite, Dean Pendry, who has stepped into a Coaching role.
There was a decent sprinkling of Mangotsfield fans in the ‘gate’ of 65 on a bitterly cold night at Mill Road.
Once again, the visitors found themselves behind early in the game when Billy Hopcroft gave ‘Barum a 7th minute lead, but they gradually pulled themselves back into the game, and actually had the ball in the net on the stroke of half-time, when a header by Michael Bryant clearly crossed the line with keeper Rob Holmes having to scoop the ball out from behind the goalline.
The referee and Assistants were probably the only people in the ground who did not see this!
If that was a major talking point during the game, that soon turned to more disbelief as Mangotsfield managed to create enough chances to have won the game, with Kane Simpson being the main guilty party as he managed to go through the defence on three occasions in the last twenty minutes, with only the keeper to beat, but fail to find the target.
Once ‘The Field’ had levelled with a header from Tom Warren after 52 minutes, they took control of the game, but as has been the case all season, could not finish. A very important goal from Tom Warren, who just needs three games for his 100th appearance in the sky and maroon. It was only his 3rd ever goal for us.
Despite the disappointment of not being able to take all the points, this was a well-earned draw and a big boost for new manager Ollie Price, who faces a difficult end to the campaign with a depleted squad. Hopefully, the recent arrivals of Adam Kelly and Michael Bryant will go some way to addressing that, and perhaps an extended run for youngster Sam Hill, will help him to adjust to this level of football.
Saturday will see a sterner test in North Devon, as we go to Bideford AFC, missing the experienced Ed Weeks, who will be suspended. Another problem for Ollie to deal with!
