Robins press on for play-offs
Saturday 21st April 2018, The Evo-Stik League South – West Division. Attendance 168
Mangotsfield United…0 Evesham United…2
Manager Ollie Price faced selection problems, once again, as he had to tackle a strong, play-off chasing ‘Robins’ side without a recognised central defender. Both Ed Weeks and Tom Warren will not play again this season, and with Alex Monks and Sam Hill injured, it was re-shuffle time.
Evesham’s Carl Brown was the first to have a sight of goal, but he did finish erratically, and moments later Mangotsfield’s Kane Simpson broke through but appeared to be pulled back by the arm, but referee Andrew Evans was not swayed by some rather unconvincing, penalty appeals.
The Robins lost Carl Brown to an early injury after 16 minutes which saw the introduction of ex-Field favourite Olly Mehew. There was little between the sides, but the main threats came from the visitors. Garyn Preen floated a free-kick dangerously past the near post, and Adam Mann also went close with a low drive.
When Kane Simpson was tripped on the edge of the box, Jordan Williams bent a free-kick on target but keeper Kevin Sawyer gathered the ball with ease. There was a decent opportunity for the hosts when, in the 38th minute, Kye Simpson headed a long ball through to his brother Kane, who delayed his shot and the ball was whipped off his toe.
Both Kyle Tooze and Michael Bryant had been asked to take on defensive roles, and were both prominent, with Tooze making a superb block on a goal-bound effort. However, in the five minute spell before half-time, Evesham struck twice to basically seal the game.
Adam Mann’s low 25 yard drive squeezed inside George Dorrington’s left-hand post, following a good run (0-1). The keeper ‘s view was possibly blocked, and then on the stroke of half-time, substitute Olly Mehew, returned to haunt his old club by exchanging passes in the box with Jordan Bryan, and sidefooting the ball past Dorrington from about 8 yards. (0-2).
It was always going to be a difficult second-half for the hosts, but Evesham, with obviously one eye on the play-offs, kept a firm defensive hold on the game. Kevin Sawyer, as always, was confident between the posts, and has lost a little weight, ahead of his coming retirement!! Well done Kevin!
He saved well from a Michael Bryant half-volley, and bundled away an effort from Kye Simpson after brother Kane had put him through.
Archie Haskayne almost caught George Dorrington out with a dropping volley from 35 yards, but the keeper backpeddled enough to be able to clutch the ball just a few yards from goal.
A header from Garyn Preen came back off the crossbar, whilst at the other end, there were two chances for the hosts to pull a goal back. As Kane Simpson bore down on goal with Kevin Sawyer in his sights, Matt Liddiard produced a timely intervention to thwart the danger, and moments later, Adam Kelly summed up the afternoon, when he blasted a half-chance over the top from the edge of the area.
