Cinderford Town….4 Mangotsfield United…3
Report by Ron Loftus
Games between these two teams are rarely uneventful occasions and on a bright, warm and yes SUNNY day (!) in the Forest of Dean on Saturday this affair was no exception to the rule ! A weakened Mangotsfield side missing Connor Jones, Ed Weeks, Michael Bryant and Alex Monks, and on a playing surface that had suffered more than most from the recent attrocious weather conditions, were stretched to the limit only being able to name three on the bench - including Manager Ollie Price.
Our hosts began the game strongly and only a brave,point-blank save from George Dorrington after 5 mins. kept the scoresheet blank. Kane Simpson worked an opening for himself a few minutes later but blasted high, wide and not very handsome with a clear sight of goal. Cinderford, unsurprisingly, were enjoying far greater possession in midfield and after a neat interchange of passes, Craig Norman pulled his right-foot shot wide of the left-hand post when he should have put his side ahead.
After 22 mins. however, powerful striker Richard Greaves broke through several tackles before hitting a long-range effort past Dorrington into the bottom corner.(0 – 1). Mangotsfield provided an almost immediate response when, after 25 mins., a corner on the right was played short and when the cross was swung in it was hooked home by Sam Hill from 12 yards out to bring the scores level.(1 – 1). A third goal in 6 mins. arrived soon after when, on 28 mins., a long ball forward on the right saw an attacker get behind the ‘ Field’s rearguard and a clumsy challenge from Jake Gardner saw the Referee pointing to the spot.
The penalty was struck firmly home by Dan McDonald to put Cinderford ahead.(1 – 2). As the game moved into added-on time at the end of the half, George Lloyd’s miscued clearance led to a corner which was headed powerfully home by the unmarked Greaves for his second of the match and provide the home team with what, at that time, looked to be an unassailable lead.
H.T. 1 – 3
This current Mangotsfield side, however, has exhibited several times recently that they are prepared to keep battling despite the odds being against them. On 55 mins. we were back in the game when a quickly taken free-kick saw Kye Simpson time his run to perfection to beat the offside-trap before slotting home into the bottom left-hand corner as Clarke advanced.(2 – 3). The most controversial moment of the game however, arrived on 65 mins. when, with the ‘ Field’s Sam Hill lying prostrate on the ground with what appeared to be a serious injury, Referee Mr.Pratt ( – enough said ! – ) allowed play to continue.
With Cinderford in possession and declining to play the ball out, a depleted Mangotsfield defence failed to deal with a cross in from the left which was headed home by Dan McDonald at the near post.(2 – 4). A riled-up ‘ Field then fought tooth and nail to get back into the game and when Kyle Tooze cut in from the left and unleashed a powerful, rising strike it took a brilliant one-handed save from Clarke in the home goal to prevent a third goal for the visitors.
A frustrated Tom Warren saw ‘RED’ for the visitors after 82 mins. when a rash kick at Cinderford’s Bamford meant the ‘ Field finished the game with 10 men. Still prepared to carry the battle to the home side however, the deficit was reduced after 88 mins. when stand-in right-back, George Lloyd, played a long ball down the right touchline where Kane Simpson got past his marker before crossing low to the near post where brother Kye got in front of a defender to poke home from close range.(3 – 4). As the game moved into stoppage time one last attempt by the visitors nearly brought an equaliser as Jordan Williams’ corner from the right was only cleared as far as Kye Simpson who took a touch before firing high over the bar and the game was brought to an end.
To end on one last happier footnote though, ‘ Yours truly ‘ left the ground some £50 better off following success in the half-time 50-50 draw !! As they say: “ – every cloud etc.etc. “
