Mangotsfield United...0 Barnstaple Town...3
Barum take the points
Monday 2nd April 2018, The Evo-Stik League South – West Division. Attendance 132
Mangotsfield United…0 Barnstaple Town…3
Easter Monday traffic and accidents on the M5 delayed the Barnstaple side, which meant a kick-off at 3.40pm. The hosts went in search of an early breakthrough and put ‘Barum’ keeper Robert Holmes under a lot of pressure. Incredibly in the opening 15 minutes, Mangotsfield spurned seven very good opportunities. Holmes tippd a George Lloyd effort around the post and then went low to deny Michael Bryant.
George Lloyd then burst through in a one-on-one situation but Holmes produced an excellent save. Moments later it was Kye Simpson in a similar situation, but Holmes kept it out. A goal seemed an almost certainty when Sam Hill powered in a header but Holmes stretched to fingertip the ball over the top. George Lloyd was then again guilty of another wasted opportunity, as Holmes spread himself, and Kye Simpson was then put in on the right-hand side of the area, but blasted well over.
It was 34 minutes before Barnstaple carried any sort of threat as Mitch Thomas saw his volley curl outside of the far post. Five minutes later, our worst fears were confirmed as Mitch Thomas was left completely unmarked, and he gave George Dorrington no chance from around 10 yards. (0-1)
To say that the hosts were stunned, was an understatement, but they had an early opportunity to level, but Kye Simpson, in plenty of open space, delayed his shot, and the chance was lost. George Nancekivell threatened and George Dorrington was forced to go full-stretch to push the low drive away.
Dorrington then saved well from Alex Gray as Barnstaple realised that they were in a strong position. In the 67th minute, they increased their lead, through Nathan Cooper, who hooked the ball home from close range. (0-2).
Kye Simpson had the ball in the net after 70 minutes, but was rightly ruled offside, and then, substitute brother Kane, had the best chance of all but somehow managed to head over the top from two yards!
With the game edging away from the hosts, Barnstaple sealed the points with Mitch Thomas’s second of the afternoon. In the 75th minute, he quickly turned in the box and netted with a low left-shot. (0-3).
So, the points were on their way to North Devon, and deservedly so, but a big disappointment for a Mangos side, who had done so well to gain a well-earned point at promotion-chasing Supermarine, just two days earlier.
