Swindon Supermarine….2 Mangotsfield United…2
Report by Ron Loftus
Only the tremendous efforts of a large group of local volunteers enabled this match to go ahead at a rain-soaked Webbswood Stadium on Saturday. Their endeavours were rewarded with two sides producing a battling, toe-to-toe performance on a rapidly deteriorating playing surface in front of a larger than normal Easter Holiday crowd. With the home side looking to cement their position in the end-of-season play-offs, it was the visitors who started the game the stronger. Following a neat exchange of passes down the right flank, it was the industrious Sam Hill who floated an excellent cross to the back post where Kane Simpson took a touch before firing low into the bottom corner to put the ‘Field ahead after just 7 mins. (1-0).
Another out-swinging cross from Hill after 14 mins. saw Mike Bryant’s deft header travelling towards the top corner before home ‘ keeper , Josh Hill, rose to push the effort over the bar. George Dorrington , who enjoyed probably one of his best performances of the season between the posts, was called into action on 18 mins. as he flew to his right to push a long-range shot over the bar to maintain the ‘ Field’s advantage.
A Connor Jones throw-in from the right to Mike Bryant saw the skipper set up Alex Monks on the edge of the area but his low strike flew just wide of the right-hand upright. Swindon came more into the game as the half progressed and were enjoying a greater share of possession. With wing-back , Ryan Morgan and Ryan Campbell causing problems for the Mangotsfield rearguard on the left, it was the diminutive Campbell who drew the home side level on the stroke of half-time when he cut in along the left bye-line before firing powerfully across goal where his shot was deflected before beating Dorrington at his near post. (1-1).
It was George Dorrington who prevented our hosts from taking the lead after 50mins. when a powerful shot from Hooper took a wicked deflection which saw the ‘ Field’s custodian changing direction going low to his right to push the effort wide one-handed - a tremendous save ! On 64 mins. it seemed we would go ahead as Kye Simpson received a through ball from his brother and outstripped a tiring home defence but his weak effort failed to beat the advancing Hill who gathered low to his left when perhaps the ‘ Field striker should have done better.
However, it was Kye who redeemed himself on 72 mins. when, once again, he was quickest to a through ball before slotting home as the onrushing keeper was beaten to the ball.(2-1). Not for the first time in recent weeks, we conceded almost immediately when we allowed a cross to be played in from the left and Parsons was able to head home from close range.
As both teams visibly tired in the closing stages and challenges became more desperate a fracas in front of the dug-outs saw several players become involved but at the end of the dispute just Adam Kelly and Swindon’s Jon Else received yellow cards from Referee Mike Halford, who officiated the game well throughout and made allowances for the difficult playing surface. At the final whistle both teams had done enough to earn a point apiece.
