Mangos edge through against The Wood
Saturday 24th March 2018, The Evo-Stik League South – West Division. Attendance 122
Mangotsfield United…3 Shortwood United…2
Mangotsfield kept their unbeaten run going with a strong performance against Shortwood United, but were missing the midfield industry of Kyle Tooze & defensive qualities of Connor Jones. There was a very early chance for Kye Simpson but ‘Wood’ keeper Harry Pickering plucked the ball out of the air as it went goalwards.
An inswinging cross from Kye Simpson, following a good run by brother Kane down the right hand side, whizzed dangerously past the far post, before ‘The Field’ took a 10th minute lead. A free-kick into the box by Alex Monks, was headed on and Michael Bryant planted a looping header over Pickering. (1-0).
Jordan Williams then tried his luck with a low volley across the face of the goal, before Shortwood started to make their mark. Ryan Meredith was off-target with a snap shot but in the 18th minute, they were level when Will Hawes turned to drive a low shot across the goalmouth, beating keeper George Dorrington at the far post. (1-1).
There were chances for both sides. Alex Monks had a free-kick blocked, but also reached the rebound to fire wide. Michael Bryant did well with a shot on the turn, before Harry Pickering produced a reactive fingertip save from a close-range header from Ed Weeks.
There was a glaring miss from Ryan Thwaite who scooped the ball over the top from 4 yards, but two excellent goals within a minute had the adrenalin going! In the 39th minute, Michael Bryant bagged his second goal of the afternoon with a superb volley from 25 yards, (2-1), and just a minute later, Alex Kibble pulled ‘The Wood’ level with an equally stunning rocket-shot, also from 25 yards, which keeper George Dorrington only saw as it fizzed past him (2-2).
Six minutes into the second-half saw a goalmouth scramble, with Harry Pickering making a reflex save from Kye Simpson, and it was clear that ‘The Field’ were looking to step up the pace for a winner. The game began to get a little sloppy with a few, perhaps unnecessary, bookings before the hosts were awarded a penalty in the 64th minute. A packed goalmouth saw Michael Bryant tripped, although there was a suggestion that the Shortwood keeper had been fouled. The penalty-kick fell to Jordan Williams, and he dispatched it coolly. (3-2).
With twelve minutes left, Manager Ollie Price opted to bring all three substitutes on together, as the hosts were suffering the strain of their last two games on the road. George Lloyd, & Sam Hill joined Zayn Alime, who was making his debut. Shortwood were looking for the equaliser, but ‘The Field’ were pressing them well when in possession, giving them little option to push forward.
Zayn Alime had a chance to open his account but snatched at his shot and Harry Pickering parried, and although Kane Simpson reached the rebound, he sliced it wide.
So, The Mangos brought their recent good form home to Cossham Street, and currently there are plenty of goals involved – at both ends! They will be hoping to keep things going on Tuesday against North Leigh, who had a restful Saturday, as they did not play!
