Report by Ron Loftus

With the ‘ mini ‘ Beast from the East providing a cutting, icy wind that blew from end-to-end at the Loop Meadow home of our hosts Didcot Town and producing temperatures that felt several degrees below freezing, Mangotsfield gave their best performance of the season in securing their third win on the ‘ bounce ‘ as the revival continues under the guidance of Ollie Price and his team.

A hat-trick from recent recruit , Kye Simpson , plus a goal from brother Kane saw the ‘ Field return home with a hard-fought win against a side that boasted one of the best home records in the league.

The game began with the promotion-chasing home side going straight on the offensive as they sought an early advantage. A succession of corners saw debutant ‘ Field ‘ goalkeeper, Lochlan Robertson – on loan from Bristol City – put under immediate pressure but after a nervy start he recovered well as Didcot dominated the opening exchanges. However, the influential Kyle Tooze gave warning of what was to follow after 12mins. when his well-struck effort from 30 yards saw home custodian , Leigh Bedwell , flinging himself high to his right to push the effort wide when it seemed destined for the top corner.

On 24 mins. the industrious Mike Bryant played an excellent pass inside the Didcot right-back for Kye Simpson to run onto before striking his shot home low to Bedwell ‘ s left. (1 – 0). Just 4 mins. later, the lead was doubled as Kyle Tooze ran from the halfway line before playing another defence-splitting pass inside the full-back for Kane Simpson to produce a ‘ carbon copy ‘ of his brother ‘ s earlier effort. (2 – 0 ). This stung the home side into action and they responded on 36 mins. when a shot from just outside the area by Callum McNish was parried by Robertson straight into the path of the incoming Morgan Williams who had the simplest of chances to score into the empty net. (2 – 1). Lifted by the goal, our hosts were level just 3 mins. later when an inswinging corner from the right was pushed onto the post by Robertson before George Lloyd ‘ s miscued clearance into the air was met with a powerful header by home ‘ skipper Adam Learoyd to bring the sides level going into the break. (2 – 2).

HT: 2-2

Now with the wind at their backs, the ‘ Field wasted no time in regaining the lead when half-time substitute, Jordan Ricketts , fed Jordan Williams wide on the left and the wing-back made good progress to reach the bye-line before crossing low to the near post where the alert Kye Simpson nipped in front of ‘ keeper Bedwell to restore the visitors advantage. (3 – 2). The almost inevitable rash of substitutions for both teams followed from the hour-mark onwards and it was the home side’s Seth Humphries who made the most telling contribution when, having only been on the pitch for a couple of minutes, he cut in from the left to fire an unstoppable shot over Robertson’s head into the top right-hand corner to bring the teams level once again after 77 mins.(3 – 3). As both sides tired visibly in the closing stages, the ‘ Field’s defence battled hard to keep our hosts at bay and then with the game moving into additional time at the end of the match, a long clearance found Kye Simpson some 30 yards from goal with two defenders for company. However, he muscled his way through before slotting home past the advancing Bedwell to make the final scoreline 4 – 3 !! Cue wild celebrations both on the pitch and in the away dug-out as the 3 points made their way back to Cossham Street ! A gargantuan effort from the boys on a difficult day – well done to all involved.
