Report by Ron Loftus
On a beautiful, crystal clear Winter’s day as a strong breeze blew from end-to-end over the well prepared playing surface at the Wisloe Road home of our hosts, Slimbridge , the last of the heavy clouds that had been hovering over Cossham Street in recent months began to disperse ! As Ollie Price continues to revamp the playing squad with the addition of returning former ‘Field favourite, Kyle Tooze, we recorded a comfortable 2-0 victory courtesy of goals in each half from Kyle Tooze and Kye Simpson.
Our injury-hit hosts saw the departure of former ‘ Field player and current club skipper, Alex Hoyle, on a stretcher when he came off second-best following a strong challenge on the near touchline after 20 mins. Thereafter, the hard-working and fast-running Simpson brothers - ably supported by the probing, attacking play of Kyle Tooze on the left - caused problems for the home defence. With strong midfield support - especially from Alex Monks and Michael Bryant - we began to dominate proceedings with only the home teams lively Marley Thomas on the right flank causing any problems for the visiting rearguard - again well-marshalled by Tom Warren - but he lacked any real support. We thought we had taken the lead after 28 mins. when a header rebounded from the home crossbar and Michael Bryant reacted quickest to head home but the Assistant Referee deemed him to have been in an offside position. We did, however , go in front after 35 mins. when Kye Simpson outstripped the home defence and as home ‘ keeper , Ollie Hall , advanced he slipped the ball across the area for the incoming Kyle Tooze to rifle into the vacant net.(1-0). There then followed a spell of intense Mangotsfield pressure on the Slimbridge goal with a series of well-flighted corners from Jordan Williams creating havoc in the home defence and the ball coming off the crossbar on more than one occasion. However, the scoreline remained 1-0 at the interval.
The all-important second goal for the ‘ Field arrived on the hour mark as, once again, Kye Simpson was too quick for the Slimbridge rearguard as a delightful through ball from brother Kane was confidently dispatched from the edge of the box as Hall advanced. (2-0). Midway through the half the home sides best chance fell to Thomas but following a cross from the left his diving header was off-target and George Dorrington continued to enjoy his quietest afternoon for some time with barely a save to make throughout the entire game! This result and performance should give the team confidence going forward as, no doubt, sterner tests await but a vital 3 points sees us climb further away from the basement and within reach of the ‘ dizzy heights ‘ of mid-table.
Well done to Ollie and all the boys!
