Mangotsfield United…1 Winchester City…1
Manager Ollie Price was pleased that Mangotsfield fought their way back into this game to salvage a point. Missing Josh Nelmes, through suspension & Jake Gardner, Jordan Ricketts, and recent signing Adam Kelly to injury, it was always going to be a tough game against high-flying Winchester, and on a very heavy pitch. (Well done to Pete Crowley).
‘The Citizens’ almost scored in the first minute, when a needless free-kick was conceded on the right-hand edge of the area and Rob Carr clipped the crossbar with the well-flighted delivery. ‘The Field’ responded with Kane Simpson sending a header way over the top, a good run down the right by Charlie Maddison, and a burst through the middle by Kailan Gould. His effort was deflected and Kailan Gould saw his cross blocked by a defender.
Both sides needed more accuracy, with Oli Bailey driving wide from 10 yards, and then some desperate defending by the hosts saw two Winchester efforts blocked, one being almost cleared off the line. Kane Simpson saw his low volley saved by the legs of Ryan Pryce, and when the striker went through, just minutes before the break, into a one-on-one situation, Pryce again denied him with a superb save with an outstretched leg.
At the other end, George Dorrington did well to block a fierce drive from Pat Cox as the first half came to a close.
Winchester started the second-half strongly and took the lead after 67 minutes through Jamie Barron, whose low drive took a deflection off a home defender to deceive George Dorrington. 0-1.
For a while, ‘The Field’ looked to have lost their focus, but the introduction of Sam Hill and Lewis G. Powell provided the spark and they were back in the game with a late leveller. Kane Simpson dragged the ball across the area and went around keeper Pryce, but was brought down in full flight. The resultant penalty was neatly put away by Simon Gilbert. 1-1.
Moments later, Ed Weeks saw red for his second caution, but there were still opportunities for both sides to have nicked all the points. Kane Simpson was guilty of blasting wide from a good position, and with the last action of the game, Winchester were awarded a free-kick from 25 yards, but the shot, well on target, was safely held by George Dorrington.
