Mangotsfield United…1 AFC Totton…1
Match report by Dave Smale
Despite a spirited & battling performance on a heavy pitch following all the rain earlier in the day, Mangotsfield United were unable to hold on to their 1-0 lead, which they’d held for 70 minutes, as AFC Totton levelled in stoppage time, following a spell of late pressure on the home goal.
Mangotsfield began the stronger side with Connor Jones firing over from 25 yards on 3 minutes. The livewire Kailan Jones then saw his shot on 7 minutes fumbled by Totton keeper Shane Murphy & Kane Simpson almost prodded home the loose ball, but Murphy recovered the ball just in time. Josh Nelmes then fired a low drive past the post on 8 minutes & Totton’s first serious strike came on 11 minutes when Tobi Adekunie fired over from 20 yards.
Mangotsfield kept pushing forward & were rewarded with the opening goal on 20 minutes. Kailan Gould set up John Elliott down the right & his cross was duly headed home by Kane Simpson. Totton responded immediately with a goal attempt being blocked by some resolute defending. Simpson & Gould then inked up together in a bid to make it 2-0, but the ball was partially cleared, but only back to Simpson who then fired over from 15 yards. The lively Connor Jones then went on a jinking run, only to see his shot saved by keeper Murphy, but back came Totton on 36 minutes with Craig Feeney’s strike being pushed wide by Mangos keeper George Dorrington. Mangotsfield almost grabbed a 2nd goal on 38 minutes when John Elliott’s low cross was deflected past the keeper by a defender, with another Totton player clearing the ball off the line as the goal beckoned, but the half ended with Totton striker Feeney going close with a rising drive.
HT: Mangotsfield United 1, AFC Totton 0
Totton came out strongly after the break, with pitch conditions even heavier than they were at 3pm & clearly, this half was going to be an energy-sapping exercise for both sides. Totton defender Connor York went close on 47 minutes with a shot just wide of goal & then a clever Jordan Williams free kick was well saved by Totton keeper Murphy. The visitors were now dominating possession in midfield, but lacking penetration up front. Even so, Kane Simpson still managed to get through their defence on 62 minutes, only for keeper Murphy to smother the ball at his feet.
Connor Jones then went on another wily run for at least 30 yards, which deserved a goal for his shot which was saved by Murphy, but as the game went into the final 20 minutes, just like against Taunton on Tuesday, the visitors seemed to be camped around our penalty box, helped by late substitutions & fresh legs, with Mangotsfield defending like Trojans. Twice the ball was cleared off the home line, as sub Ollie Price, Josh Nelmes & Martin Stowell marshalled the back line, but Totton finally got the equaliser their late pressure threatened in stoppage time. A last-gasp right wing cross was bundled home at the near post by Nathaniel Sherborne, proving that football can be a cruel game at times.
Mangotsfield’s team put in one heck of a shift for the 90 minutes, with some heroic defending, shot-blocking & the like, but Totton’s late pressure always looked ominous & the equaliser they craved finally came with less than a minute of stoppage time left.
