Match Report by Ron Loftus
DISMAL DAY IN RURAL GLOUCESTERSHIRE
On a dull, cloudy day with a cold breeze blowing across a difficult playing surface, the ‘ Field surrendered meekly to bottom-of-the-table hosts, Bishops Cleeve. In the space of just seven days we went from producing possibly our best result and performance of the season to what was, indesputably, our worst showing to date by some distance! This against a team with just one previous league victory to their name all season.
Having said all of that, the ‘ Field began the game in positive fashion and during the first 20 mins. created at least three clear-cut goalscoring opportunities but neither Kailan Gould, Kane Simpson or Robert Hobbs could take advantage with weak efforts on goal. It was almost inevitable that Cleeve, with their first goal attempt after 21mins. took the lead ! A corner from the right was not dealt with by the visiting defence and IEUAN CROWE was able to hook the loose ball into the roof of the net from 8 yds. (1-0). The ‘ Field failed to respond to this setback and went in at half-time looking short on ideas of how to get back into the game.
The one thing we did not need was to concede early in the second period but on 47mins. a long goal kick was flicked on by CROWE for Cleeve No.7, HARRISON IDDLES, to run through a static Mangotsfield defence and calmly side-foot past DORRINGTON into the bottom left-hand corner as the ‘ keeper advanced from his goal. (2-0). Just 5mins. later, a clumsy challenge by Ed Weeks saw a penalty awarded to the home side. JOE BATES ‘ well-struck spot kick into the bottom left-hand corner gave DORRINGTON no chance and we then faced a mountain to climb.(3-0). On 63 mins., substitute Tom Warren gave the ball away in midfield and the impressive home front man, JACK WATTS, strode forward purposefully before unleashing an unstoppable strike into the top left-hand corner from fully 30yards.(4-0). The usual rash of substitutions did nothing to change the shape of the game and our hosts ran out comfortable and deserved winners
When individuals and a team collectively under-perform due to a perceived lack of effort and commitment, then the result is almost inevitable - no matter WHO the opposition is ! This performance was simply not good enough but full credit to a battling home side whose desire for the victory was far greater than ours.
