Mangotsfield United...2 Bristol Manor Farm...1
Ten man Field edge home
Saturday 6th January 2018, The Evo-Stik League South – West Division. Attendance 214
Mangotsfield United….2 Bristol Manor Farm….1
The first competitive meeting of these two local rivals, at Cossham Street, since 1999, saw Mangotsfield overcome the odds for an unexpected victory. Sitting in 3rd place in the table, ‘The Farm’ were clear pre-match favourites, but it was the hosts who started the game on the front foot. Kane Simpson made ground down the right and slipped a ball across the area, but it was a little too far for the incoming Robert Hobbs.
A good through ball by Kailan Gould was edged away for a corner before Tom Warren fired a volley wide of the far post. ‘The Farm’ came back with Troy Simpson heading narrowly wide with keeper George Dorrington scrambling to reach it, and then Jordan Metters broke through but Dorrington did well to block his shot. Dorrington then had to go full stretch to save low at the far post from Ben Bament.
After 29 minutes, Mangotsfield took the lead following a clever move. Jordan Ricketts pushed a ball down the right-hand side to Kane Simpson and he in turn sent in a low cross which was turned home by Kailan Gould, for his first goal for the club. 1-0.
‘The Field’ then lost Tom Warren to injury, with Jake Elliott coming on and two minutes before the break, the hosts increased their lead. Kailan Gould started the move with a ball to Jordan Ricketts, who went past the defender, and his shot across the face of the goal found the net at the far post just ahead of the inrushing Kane Simpson, who made sure it crossed the line!!

BMF started the second-half in the most positive fashion, reducing the lead within a minute of the re-start. A low ball across the box from the right, found the deadly Dean Stamp, and he had the simple chance of slotting home. 2-1.
Lewis G. Powell was given an opportunity by Kailan Gould, but his shot from 20 yards was too close to keeper Ashley Clark. However, in the 64th minute, Lewis G. Powell saw red for a two-footed challenge, following one or two skirmishes with his ex-team-mates earlier. Now the pressure was on the ten men of Mangotsfield, as the visitors pressed hard for the leveller.
The introduction of substitute and ex-Mango Matt Groves, would be a testing one, but ‘’Field’ manager Wayne Thorne opted to bring off Kailan Gould for the defensive qualities of Martin Stowell, yet another ex-Farm player!
There were several anxious moments for ‘Field’ fans in the closing 20 or so minutes as ‘The Farm’ piled on the pressure, but the hosts stood firm with Josh Nelmes and Ed Weeks in dominant mood. Everyone gave 100% in defence, but ‘The Farm’ were never quite able to break the hosts down although Matt Groves and Jordan Metters went close.
No doubt this was a strong performance from the Mangotsfield squad, following a week or so of adverse publicity, and it showed at the end that this squad of players were very much together,.
