Mangotsfield United….1 Yate Town….3
Match Report by David Smale
Mangotsfield’s historically poor form against Yate Town may have taken a break last season, when we beat the Bluebells 3 times in 4 attempts, but normal service was resumed today with Yate comfortably winning 3-1 against a generally poor, low on confidence Mangotsfield side, who – despite hitting the woodwork twice – never really looked like scoring until Charlie Maddison’s 90th minute consolation effort.
The Mangos started well with Kane Simpson firing wide after 5 minutes, with Yate’s first goal attempts coming on 7 & 8 minutes with headers from Lewis Leigh-Gilchrist & Ben Brooks both going close. Seconds later, George Lloyd found himself clean through the middle in a 1-on-1 situation with Yate keeper Harvey Rivers, who blocked the shot, only for Kane Simpson to hammer the loose ball against the cross bar & it was cleared away. However, on 15 minutes, Yate took the lead, thanks to an own goal from Josh Nelmes, who diverted a low cross from the left side into his own net, after Yate’s Ben Brooks had turned his marker. Five minutes later, Kailan Gould was presented with a potential open goal situation after a poor clearance by Rivers went straight to him, but he blasted the ball over the bar from 25 yards.
Yate should have gone further ahead on 22 minutes when Kyle Tooze saw his shot blocked by Mangos keeper George Dorrington, but the ball rolled to Adam Price whose shot was then cleared off the line by a home defender. Jordan Williams then saw his free kick on 26 minutes just clear the Yate bar, but Yate could again have scored again on 32 minutes when Robert Hobbs cleared the bal off the line following a Yate attack, only for Adam Price top blaze the rebound over the home bar. Kailan Gould then saw his shot blocked by Yate keeper Harvey Rivers, but the Bluebirds’ 2nd goal finally came on 34 minutes when Adam Price fired into the top corner from 20 yards. With Mangotsfield’s midfield struggling to make their mark on the match, it was Yate who looked more like scoring now, with only a high & wide strike from Yate full back Mayson Evans going anywhere near the net to perhaps add to the score before the break.
HT: Mangotsfield United 0, Yate Town 2
Early Mangotsfield pressure after the break saw no real clear-cut chances created, but Ed Weeks almost scored in a goalmouth scramble on 52 minutes, before a good striker from ex-Mango Nick Peare was diverted for a corner a minute or so later. Yate could have gone 3-0 up on 55 minutes when Ben Brooks fired wide from a good position after a neat move. Mangotsfield responded with George Lloyd’s shot being blocked by a defender on 59 minutes & then Robert Hobbs hit the bar from close range, following an Ed Weeks header on 64 minutes.
However, with 21 minutes to go, Yate wrapped up the win once & for all with their 3rd goal. Kyle Tooze chased a lost-cause ball down the right side, with no home defender pressing him. His cross from the right was almost turned into goal by a home defender, but keeper George Dorrington could only push the ball out to Ben Brooks, who scored with ease from close range to make it 3-0.
Three minutes later, Yate could have made it 4-0, following a complete breakaway, after a Mangotsfield attack broke down, but Ben Brooks fired wide with only keeper George Dorrington to beat. Ed Weeks then fired over the bar from 5 yards as another Mangotsfield attack broke down, and sub Charlie Maddison flicked the ball just over the bar on 88 minutes, but the hosts did pull a goal back on 90 minutes as Maddison blasted home from 15 yards after some good work on the edge of the box. Nonetheless, it was too little too late for Mangotsfield & Yate were deserved winners on the day.
With a vital away game against fellow strugglers Barnstaple Town coming up on Saturday, and - looking further afield – a pivotal tie away at Bishops Cleeve not too far away on 13 January, it’s important we get something from both matches in this season of struggle.
