Peacocks step closer to title
Tuesday 16th January 2018, The Evo-Stik League South – West Division. Attendance 141
Mangotsfield United…0 Taunton Town…1
Mangotsfield faced another daunting task as West Division leaders Taunton Town, took the points and a step nearer the title with a narrow victory at Cossham Street, the goal coming very early in the game.
Taunton opened brightly and when they took the lead in the 12th minute, Mangotsfield fans feared the worst. Dan Sullivan, on the left-hand side of the area, lobbed the ball goalwards, and it flew over the top of the defence, with George Dorrington seemingly rooted to his line, and nestled in the far corner of the net. Whether it was an intended shot on target, only Dan can say!!
Kailan Gould had an opportunity to level in thre 18th minute, but his effort drifted across the face of the goal. Sullivan had a great chance after 22 minutes but Dorrington blocked his effort, and there were three or four subsequent efforts blocked before thre Mangos defence were able to get the ball out of their area to safety.
Taunton keeper Lloyd Irish denied Mangotsfield an equaliser on the half hour mark with an excellent stop from Jordan Ricketts.
The Peacocks started the second half in a positive manner, and a Ross Staley cross found Dan Sullivan, who brought out a superb save from George Dorrington. A Matthew Wright header was only inches over the top from another dangerous Ryan Brett corner.
Taunton keeper Lloyd Irish had to be alert however, as a close-range volley, just before the hour, saw him fingertip the ball away for a corner.
Taunton dominated the proceedings in the final 20 minutes in a bid to try & finish the Mangos off, but some superb defending meant that the hosts remained in contention right until the final whistle. The ‘Peacocks’ laid siege to the home goal, with several shots blocked & one cleared off the line by Tom Warren as a second goal seemed likely. Several corners added to the pressure & Ed Weeks headed off the line at one point. George Dorrington got down well to block a strike by Pierce Mitchell & then Mangos skipper Josh Nelmes was booked for disputing a free kick given against us, when clearly, Taunton’s Matt Wright had pushed a Mango defender first in a race to the ball.
It was still all Taunton, though, and Mitchell then saw a 20-yard strike cleared off the line as the visitors’ pressure continued. More corners followed & another goal-bound strike was cleared off the line by Martin Stowell and then in a crowded goalmouth, Chris McGrath’s header hit the bar, from a Ryan Brett corner, & the ball was then cleared away.
With 3 minutes’ stoppage time added on, the Mangos’ only goal attempt in that period saw Matt Hill’s header saved from a well-placed free kick, but the ‘Peacocks’ were happy now to run the clock down & pick up another 3 points towards their promotion push, with the ‘Mangos’ able to reflect on a spirited & determined performance, which was a vast improvement after Saturday’s defeat at Bishops Cleeve.
