Mangotsfield United….2 Didcot Town….0
A strong second half performance earned the Mangos a vital 2-0 win against mid-table Didcot Town, as well as earning only our 2nd clean sheet of the season. Mangotsfield fielded new signings Ray Johnston in goal & Kailan Gould in attack & both players were to play a pivotal part in helping the side to 3 valuable points.
Didcot started strongly with Ray Johnston saving a header from Sam Elkins on 4 minutes, and then home skipper Josh Nelmes cleared a possibly goal-bound cross off the line on 8 minutes. Tricky Didcot winger Seth Humphries then had 2 shots on goal inside a minute & moments later, Ray Johnston came out of goal to thwart a one-on-one situation as Didcot continued to threaten. ‘The Field’ were making little impression on the visitors’ goal, apart from a couple of crosses & gave the ball away too often & it was Didcot who looked the more likely side to score.
Home defender Ed Weeks then did well on 30 minutes to head a goal-bound effort off the line, but then, just as it seemed the visitors were bound to score sooner or later, Mangotsfield took the lead on 34 minutes with their first serious goal attempt. Kane Simpson gained possession of the ball inside the Didcot half, ran forward & sent over a perfect cross from the right for Jordan Ricketts to knock home unchallenged from close range. This goal stunned Didcot who immediately resumed their pressure on the home defence, with the best chance coming on 40 minutes when defender Sam Elkins broke through the home defence with only keeper Ray Johnston to beat, but once again, the home keeper thwarted the chance & made a great save. The first half ended with Didcot no doubt regretting their wasted chances so far.
HT: Mangotsfield United 1, Didcot Town 0
Whatever was said in the Mangotsfield dressing room at half time had an immediate effect as the hosts began strongly with Connor Jones twice firing over the bar following good team moves on 47 & 48 minutes. Didcot replied with a volley over the bar from Cameron McNeill on 50 minutes, but it was Mangotsfield who began to dictate the play in the next part of the game, the best move ending with a volley by Jordan Williams which was destined for the top corner, only to be pushed over by Didcot keeper Leigh Bedwell. Meanwhile, home keeper Ray Johnston made another good save on 57 minutes amid a goalmouth scramble, but it was the livewire home debutant striker Kailan Gould who was now causing problems in the visitors’ defence. A jinking run of Kailan’s on the hour saw his shot hit the top of the Didcot bar & go over, with the keeper well beaten.
Didcot did their best to try & replicate their first half form, but that wasn’t happening as the Mangotsfield defence had tightened up & little was being given away. On 73 minutes, Tom Warren got in on the act with a long-range 30 yard strike which Leigh Bedwell did well to save, but 7 minutes later, that much-needed second goal for the hosts came when Jake Gardner won possession of the ball down the right, he slotted it inside to Kailan Gould, whose shot was then parried by keeper Leigh Bedwell, only for Kane Simpson to tap in the rebound from close range. On 85 minutes, any lingering hopes that Didcot may have had in trying to save the game vanished completely when right back George Jeacock was shown a straight red card for a two-footed lunge & off he went.
Still, the game wasn’t quite over just yet. There were late chances for both Kailan Gould (after another mazy run) and Kane Simpson to have added a 3rd goal, whilst at the other end, Ray Johnston made one more acrobatic save from a last-ditch Didcot strike to easily earn a Man of the Match rating.
