Mangos lost in The Wood!
Match report by Ron Loftus
Saturday 2nd December 2017, The Evo-Stik League South – West Division. Attendance 83
Shortwood United…1 Mangotsfield United….0
A disappointing performance on a drab, damp day in rural Gloucestershire saw Mangotsfield fail to capitalise on the opportunity to further distance themselves from the foot of the table despite our hosts being decimated by injuries thereby only being able to name three substitutes on the bench. Their enthusiasm, energy and commitment far outweighed that shown by the visitors to the Meadowbank Stadium. However, with new signing Jordan Ricketts making his debut in midfield, Mangotsfield enjoyed the greater share of possession during the first half but as we continually appear to bypass midfield in favour of long balls pumped endlessly towards the ever-willing Kane Simpson who, once again , ploughed virtually a lone-furrow up front, chances were at a premium.
On 10 mins. however, the alert Simpson intercepted a wayward back-pass but the covering defenders forced him infield where his shot from the edge of the area cleared the bar. The nearest we came to a goal during a largely uneventful first-half was when, on the stroke of half-time, Ed Weeks met a Jordan Williams corner from the right with a powerful header from 8 yards out which crashed back off the bar with the keeper beaten.
As the ‘ Field pushed forward in search of the opening goal they were caught out on 64 mins. when a long, diagonal ball from the right found recent returnee from Cinderford, Nick Humphreys, with just Connor Jones between him and the goal. The Shortwood player got his shot away which was blocked bravely by Dorrington but the rebound fell kindly to the Shortwood No.7 who was able to fire into the empty net (0 – 1). A rash of substitutions followed as the ‘ Field deperately tried to get back in the game but with little success. With just 5 mins. remaining the frustrations boiled over as both Simon Gilbert and the home teams Ryan Thwaite tangled on the touchline which brought both sets of players rushing to the ensuing melee’. Match Referee, Tom Fell, wisely stood back and let the participants continue before eventually producing a Red Card for Mangotsfield’s Simon Gilbert and Red Cards for both Ryan Thwaite and Alex Kibble of Shortwood. Three sendings-off in a game which had barely seen a tackle in anger from either side in the previous 85 mins!!
Despite their man advantage, Mangotsfield failed to threaten the home goal and left all three points with the home team who subsequently moved above us in the table as we dropped back to second from bottom once again.
