Evesham United…1 Mangotsfield United….1
On a bright and breezy day in the Vale of Evesham, Mangotsfield gave debuts to new signings Jason Vincent and from the bench during the second half, Charlie Maddison. This fixture saw a contest between two sides suffering a poor run of form and the loss of confidence that inevitably accompanies it. A ponderous first 45 minutes was almost totally devoid of goalmouth action at either end of the pitch. It was something of a surprise , therefore, when Evesham striker Ethan Moore was allowed a free-header from a corner on the left after 34 minutes and his looping effort deceived everybody to end up in the back of the net to give the home side the advantage which they held on to until the interval.
At half-time George Lloyd replaced the tiring Vincent, swiftly followed by the introduction of Charlie Maddison after 50 minutes. The change in the pattern of play was almost immediate. Suddenly the ‘ Field were playing some attacking, on the deck, football and began to threaten. On 54 minutes Maddison swung a pin-point cross into the box from the right which eventually fell to Kane Simpson some 15 yards out who controlled the ball well before firing a powerful right-foot shot past Kevin Sawyer in the home goal. ( 1 – 1 ). Just two minutes later and Simpson came very close to giving Mangotsfield the lead when he battled his way down the left touchline before cutting inside and curling a right-footed attempt around Sawyer but , unfortunately , just wide of the right-hand post.
As the game began to open up there were near misses at both ends before, after 75 minutes , a free-kick from Maddison on the right was met powerfully by the head of Nick Peare whose effort crashed against the post with Sawyer beaten before being scrambled clear. An entertaining second period came to an end with honours even and the gradual process of re-building shows some positive signs for Wayne Thorne ‘ s new-look outfit.
