Match Report by Ron Loftus
Saturday 18th November 2017, The Evo-Stik League South – West Division. Attendance 252
Wimborne Town…3 Mangotsfield United….1
The recent depressing run of results and performances continued in Dorset on Saturday despite an encouraging opening 45mins. where we more than matched our hosts in attacking intent.
The re-introduction of the experienced Ollie Price to the centre of the back-line brought some much needed stability to the defence but the absence of Nick Peare, Simon Gilbert and Kane Simpson, for various reasons meant yet another ‘shuffle ‘ of the pack by the beleagured Wayne Thorne as he attempts to discover the winning formula that will move us up the league table.
Forced to push Charlie Maddison up front alongside Cameron Allen, we showed a lot of effort and commitment from the outset without creating any real clear-cut opportunities. A cautionary note came on 16mins. however, when a long clearance from the home ‘keeper was picked up by the Wimborne No.11, Bayston , wide on the left who cut in before sending his shot well over the bar from 20 yards. The ‘Field almost repaid the compliment when Dorrington’s long ball upfield saw home custodian, Benfield , clatter into the onrushing Charlie Maddison before clearing. On another day we could well have been awarded a penalty, instead Referee Ablitt saw fit to award a free-kick to Wimborne ! Soon after, Cameron Allen ran at the home defence before having his shirt pulled by Wimborne’s Maybury with the Referee awarding his first yellow card of the afternoon as a result - this after 27mins. Just three minutes later another break down the Wimborne left saw the impressive Luke Burbidge receive the ball in a central position before firing a well-struck volley from 18 yards into the top right-hand corner giving Dorrington no chance. (1-0). This goal seemed to rock Mangotsfield back on their heels but we saw the half out without conceding further.
The home side stepped up a gear at the start of the second half and we had no answer to their pace and movement off the ball. Dorrington was forced to make several point-blank saves in quick succession but he was helpless to prevent Wimborne extending their lead when an incisive move down the middle saw Sam Bayston one-on-one with the young ‘keeper and he confidently slotted the ball home to give the visitors a mountain to climb. (2-0). The game was put to bed after 69mins. when several missed tackles eventually saw a penalty conceded which was powerfully put away by James Stokoe and ensured the three points would remain in Dorset. The ‘ Field did manage a late consolation when Allen’s free-kick from the left was met at the back post by the towering Martin Stowell, whose header beat Benfield in the home goal enabling Ed Weeks to fire the ball into the roof of the net from virtually on the goaline.
