Not a good day in Hampshire for Mangos!

With new signing Martin Stowell making his debut in defence and Charlie Maddison also starting, the ‘ Field made a positive and encouraging beginning to this game in Hampshire on Saturday. Cameron Allen shot straight at ‘ keeper Shane MURPHY after 3 mins. when he might have done better and a MADDISON shot from 15 yards was held by the home custodian at the foot of his right-hand post after 15 mins. Kane Simpson was working hard to create space against a resolute home defence and Mangotsfield had a penalty claim turned down when the striker appeared to have his ankles clipped in a crowded area before the ball was eventually cleared.
However, the complexion of the game changed completely when the home side’s Jack BARKER was allowed a free-header from a corner on the right to put the hosts 1-0 up after 34mins. On 43 mins. a free-kick from Robert Hobbs was met by STOWELL who beat home ‘ keeper MURPHY in the air only to see his backward header drop agonisingly over the bar. On the stroke of half-time a long clearance out of the Totton defence fell kindly to Craig FEENEY who outstripped his marker before slipping the ball past DORRINGTON to give the home team a two-goal advantage at the interval.
The game was effectively decided after 55mins. when BARKER once again was too strong in the air for our defence from a corner on the right to make the scoreline 3-0. Both sides made full use of their substitutes during the final third of the match but Totton continued to dominate proceedings and 11 minutes. from time substitute Charlie GUNSON converted a low cross into the box from the left to leave the final score at 4-0. The scoreline did not flatter the home side who were far superior all over the pitch as, yet again , we failed to get a single shot on target during a poor second half. Whilst we obviously missed the influential Nick PEARE due to suspension and there was an encouraging debut by Martin Stowell , the acquisition of a goalscorer would seem to remain a priority if we are to climb away from the basement of the league !
