Match Report Ron Loftus
Tuesday 24th October 2017, The Evo-Stik League South – West Division. Attendance 63
North Leigh…1 Mangotsfield United….0
An evenly-contested but ultimately disappointing night as the ‘ Field failed to build upon the success of the previous Saturday ‘ s home win over Larkhall. A solitary, scrambled effort mid-way through the second half by the home sides Dejon Noel-Williams decided the outcome of this lack-lustre affair on a dry but breezy night on the infamous sloping pitch at Eynsham Park.
With our hosts kicking –off playing down the slope and making an energetic start, we could have fallen behind after just 4 minutes when a deep cross from the left was met by Connor Waldon at the back post whose looping header came back off the inside of the left-hand post and was eventually scrambled clear. With the home team looking much sharper all over the pitch, the ‘ Field were forced to dig-in in an attempt to get into the game. Clear-cut goalscoring chances were at a premium but Mangotsfield were somewhat fortunate to go in all-square at the interval as Noel-Williams’ speculative shot from the edge of the area after 40 minutes bounced off the top of the bar with Dorrington beaten. After 43 minutes a corner from the left gave the Millers’ Dan James a free header but his effort cleared the bar when he really should have done better.
H.T. 0 – 0
North Leigh pressed from the start of the second period and won a succession of corners but our defence performed well to deal with the threat. The pressure from our hosts eventually paid dividends though when possession was lost on the right and a low cross into the box was met by Dejon Noel-Williams whose first attempt was blocked bravely by Dorrington but the rebound fell kindly to the tall, yellow-shirted midfielder who scrambled the ball home at the second attempt.
( 0 – 1 ) – 65 minutes.
Manager Wayne Thorne then made a quick double substitution with Jake Elliot and Andrew Carydice replacing Simon Gilbert and Jordan Williams respectively. Suddenly Mangotsfield gained more possession of the ball on the ground and worked a couple of openings but with no end product. After 81 minutes a golden opportunity was spurned when Kane Simpson broke through but lifted his shot over the bar with just Agboola to beat. With home central defenders Wellon and Paddock dominant in the air at the back for North Leigh our hosts saw out the match with the ‘Field carrying very little threat in front of goal.
