Mangos edge Larks in tight encounter
Saturday 21st October 2017, The Evo-Stik League South – West Division. Attendance 124
Mangotsfield United….3 Larkhall Athletic….1
This proved a vital win for a Mangotsfield side with new boys Kane Simpson & loanee Cameron Allen making their debut, and Andrew Carydice on the bench. Blustery conditions were difficult to cope with and the hosts, with the wind behind them, played too many long balls in the early stages.
However, they scored two quick goals in the 26th and 27th minutes through Jay Malpas, who beat keeper Shaun Semmens to a through ball and lofted it over him, and Kane Simpson, who finished at the far post from close range, thanks to a superb ball from Malpas. 2-0.
The game changed just moments later as Simpson was brought down in full flight by Shaun Semmens, who was given a red card. The sending-off seemed harsh, although it was a foul. Despite their numerical disadvantage, ‘The Larks, began to make their present felt and as is so often the case, the ten men grew in stature.
After the break, with the introduction of Dan Restorick, Larkhall took a grip on the game and Mangotsfield were being bossed about in midfield. Suddenly, Larkhall were back in the action as in the 51st minute Cory Simpson curled a left-footed drive around Mangos keeper George Dorrington and into the far corner. 2-1.
However, Mangotsfield had chances but found stand-in keeper Matt Guy equal to the task, as he kept out a low drive from Kane Simpson and blocked a volley from Cameron Allen. Larkhall were still looking dangerous however and Joe Tumelty rattled the crossbar from 25 yards with George Dorrington beaten.
With six minutes remaining, after a goalmouth scramble from successive corners, Mangotsfield increased their lead as Josh Nelmes crashed home a rebound, with the ball looking to have taken a slight deflection.
With just minutes left, Mangotsfield’s Jake Elliott was sent off following a strong tackle, although, once again, the decision seemed harsh. As Dan Restorick hobbled off, they were then down to nine men, having used all of their substitutes.
