Paulton Rovers…2 Mangotsfield United….4
What was always destined to be a fiercely contested local derby, was played out in driving rain and a strong breeze at Winterfield Road on Tuesday night. With over half – a – dozen former
Mangotsfield Utd. players in the host’s starting line-up, an entertaining match was played on a boggy pitch which only passed a last minute inspection just prior to kick-off. The home side began strongly and enjoyed the lion’s share of possession during the opening quarter of the game. We were relying heavily on the tireless running of Kane Simpson up front to cause the home defence some anxious moments.
A bad tackle by Camen HARVEY after 19mins. saw the former ‘Field player receive a red card and Mangotsfield then came more into the game.
On 23 mins. Kane Simpson broke clear only to fire his shot straight at SESAY in the home goal. After 34 mins. Kane Simpson again broke clear on the right before firing a low cross into the penalty area where a defender deflected the ball into the path of Cameron Allen who hit a powerful left-foot shot first –time from 8 yards into the corner of the net. (0-1). Soon after, SIMPSON again got free in the area but in trying to round the ‘keeper saw the ball taken off his toe by the home custodian. Just when we thought we would go into the break ahead, a long-distance effort from the home teams impressive Kailan GOULD was deflected off the head of the unfortunate Ed Weeks and ended up in the net having looped over the helpless DORRINGTON. (1-1).
Just 2 mins. into the second period, we gifted the home team a second goal when GOULD’S speculative cross from the left was misjudged completely by DORRINGTON who, believing the ball to be clearing the bar, ducked and allowed it to end up in the back of the net ! (2-1). Almost immediately Wayne Thorne brought on substitutes George Lloyd and Jordan Williams for Jay Malpas and Cameron Allen respectively and the response was staggering ! In a 4-minute period we went from trailing 1-2 to establishing a two goal advantage !
Firstly, on 56m., a ball from the left caused confusion in the home penalty area with home skipper Josh Ford eventually diverting the ball into his own net to bring the scores level.(2-2). Just 3 mins.later a Williams corner was met by the towering Stowell and his header was blocked on the line but with the ball eventually finding its way to Simpson wide on the right his perfectly flighted cross into the centre was met by the onrushing George Lloyd whose powerful header flew past Sesay in the home goal (2-3). As the ‘Field continued to exert pressure on the tiring home rearguard, keeper Sesay came out of his box to clear but his effort only reached Simpson just on the edge of the centre-circle. Controlling the ball well, the tall striker looked up and launched a delightful lob from all of 45 yards over the stranded goalkeeper and in to the vacant net (2-4). For the remainder of the game our strong defence worked hard to prevent any attempt by the home side to get back into the match and a long-awaited , deserved three points were on their way back to Cossham Street !
