Mangotsfield United….1 Slimbridge AFC…2
Manager Wayne Thorne’s new-look side showed a lot of promise, but could not get the result they needed against an equally strong looking Slimbridge, who have had impressive results of late. ‘The Field’ started brightly with clever interplay, with Steve Davies, scuffing an early effort into the keeper’s arms, and a header going just wide.
Slimbridge were quick to counter, and only a goal-line clearance by Tom Warren prevented them from taking the lead. Sam Turl & Adam Mace both tested new keeper George Dorrington, who was forced to go full length, and then make a point blank save from Kieran Squires. It was proving to be quite a pacey game, with Slimbridge looking the most likely to break the deadlock.
The hosts came close with clever play from Steve Davies giving Jordan Williams a half-chance but his quickly-taken snap shot clipped the outside of the post. Slimbridge responded by taking a 39th minute lead. A deep corner from the right, delivered by Adam Mace, saw Squires climb high above Nick Peare and nod in at the far post. 0-1.
As the first half came to a close, Jay Malpas hooked an effort wide, whilst ‘Swans’ Henry Birkett tested Dorrington with a strong volley, which the keeper pushed aside.
Mangotsfield started the second period positively and Slimbridge were pushed back for quite a while. There were opportunities for Laurent Davis-Wilson, Jay Malpas & Jake Sinclair, who certainly made things happen when he came on at the start of the second-half. Keeper Oliver Hall had already tipped one effort over the bar and in the 74th minute, he made a superb save from Jay Malpas.
From this move, Slimbridge broke forward and a through ball from Marley Thomas found ex-Mango Joe Stokes and he rifled the ball well beyond Dorrington, to double the lead. 0-2.
Clever play from Jake Sinclair brought ‘The Field’ back into the game, as he set up Laurent Davis-Wilson, who slipped the ball past Hall, with eleven minutes left.
However, with both sides having opportunities in those closing stages, it always looked likely that ‘The Swans’ would hold on for the win, which they did with some great defending, capping a good week for the club and a first-ever success at Cossham Street.
