Mangotsfield United….2 Bishops Cleeve…0
The after-effects of having lost our FA Cup Preliminary Round tie at Odd Down, and Manager David Mehew subsequently resigning, meant that Steve Phillips was placed in charge of team affairs until a new Manager is appointed.
Whatever the pre-match talk was, the team produced a much more determined performance to earn their first points of the new campaign. They started positively with new signing Mike Bryant being denied from close-range and Liam Monelle firing over the top from distance. Monelle then fired wide before, Bryant then fed Steve Davies, but keeper Lewis Clayton safely held his snap shot.
Jordan Williams was also a prominent figure and he stopped Cleeve’s Jacob Nutting with a timely intervention. Elliiot Kennedy threatened a breakthrough, but a strong tackle by Ed Weeks, and a clearance, set the hosts on course for the opening goal.
After 27 minutes, Steve Davies showed his pace in a race for the ball as it dropped into the area, and he turned and drove a right-footed ball across the face of the goal, and it clipped the inside of the far post on its way in. 1-0.
Bishop Cleeve came back with an ariel threat, which proved awkard for Phillips, but Tom Warren headed strongly away at the near post, whilst at the other end, Williams forced keeper Clayton to push his strong drive away for a corner.
The Mangos doubled their lead through new signing Mike Bryant, scoring on his debut, as he forced his way through a crowded penalty area to slide the ball into the roof of the net, off the crossbar. 2-0.

The Mitres started the second half in a positive fashion and they enjoyed a decent 20 minute spell. Jack Oldham saw his rising volley just clear the far post and again, his long-range effort was held by Phillips. A good run by Elliot Kennedy finished with him threading a low ball through the defence but the danger was thwarted by a strong block from Ed Weeks.
Phillips then fingertipped a drive by Harrison Jones over the top, before producing a reflex save from Jack Sklenar, to prevent what looked like a certain goal.
The Mangos re-asserted themselves with the introduction of Nick Peare & James Fisher and started pushing ‘The Mitres’ back. Peare headed just over the top, and Steve Davies flicked a header on to Liam Monelle, who probably should have scored, but he delayed his shot and was forced away from goal. George Lloyd then joined the fray before James Fisher almost added a third, but keeper Clayton saved well down low at his left-hand post. A much improved display, a vital three points, together with a clean sheet, gives a boost ahead of Bank Holiday Monday’s short trip to Lodge Road.
