Peacocks edge home against Mangos
Tuesday 15th August 2017, Evo-Stik League South – West Division Attendance 393, The Viridor Stadium
Taunton Town…2 Mangotsfield United…1
Despite a good first-half spell and some late pressure, Mangotsfield fell to ‘The Peacocks’ at The Viridor Stadium, but will be encouraged by a much better performance, against another of the division’s leading sides.
Probably as expected, Taunton made the positive start with both Lewis Powell and Ryan Brett going close and keeper Steve Phillips was forced into two good saves from Powell and Ben Adelsbury and so it was no surprise when they took the lead in the 19th minute, as Matt Wright glanced home a header from Shane White’s corner 1-0.
Slowly, the visitors began to find their feet and defender Tom Warren tried his luck from distance, before the equaliser came in the 26th minute. Defender Owen Irish was caught in possession and as the visitors rushed forward, Lewis Ellington’s effort took a deflection. 1-1.
Mangotsfield continued to build on that and were able to go into the interval on level terms, as the hosts lost some of their momentum.
Both sides had opportunities to forge ahead. Mangotsfield defender Ed Weeks, who had once played for ‘The Peacocks’, went close with a header, whilst moments later, ex-Mango, Lewis Powell, turned and fired just over the top.
The winning goal came in the 71st minute from the same combination as Shane White’s cross was flicked home past Phillips, by Wright for his brace. 2-1. Despite Mangotsfield protestations for offside, the goal stood.
Mangotsfield applied some late pressure, in search of a point, but even so, Wright had the ball in the net once more, after 80 minutes, but his hat-trick was denied him as the effort was disallowed.
In the final moments, Powell came close to adding a third, but his header was touched wide. Overall, it was a better performance from ‘The Field’ following Saturday’s home defeat, but on the balance of play, Taunton just about deserved their hard-fought victory.
