Mangotsfield United...0 Salisbury FC...5
Season opener shock
Saturday 12th August 2017, Evo-Stik League South – West Division Attendance 246
Mangotsfield United….0 Salisbury FC….5
A new-look Mangotsfield side, were given a harsh lesson by early promotion favourites Salisbury FC, whose neat and incisive football saw them take complete control after the interval.
Both sides took the opening 15 minutes to find their feet, but Tom Whelan tested keeper Steve Phillips early and Mark Francis floated a dangerous cross just wide of the far post.
‘The Field’s new loan signing Lewis Ellington was put through but he was beaten to the ball as keeper Charlie Searle rushed out to the edge of his area to head away, and moments later Ellington saw his 20 yard volley deflected for a corner.
Salisbury took a 23rd minute lead through Claudio Herbert – his crisp low shot beating Steve Phillips at his left-hand post. 0-1.
Four minutes later, Herbert teased defender Josh Jones into a rash tackle, and his slight trip gave away a penalty, which Mark Francis crashed high into the net. 0-2
It needed some creativity for the hosts to get back into the game, but it never came. Gradually, ‘The Whites’ took a firm stranglehold on the game, as the hosts’ midfield were dragged around. Following a booking, Liam Monelle was quickly subbed for Darren Edwards, but it was no surprise when substitute Kane O’Keefe was put through in the 73rd minute, to slot the ball past Steve Phillips 0-3.
The game was effectively over and Salisbury began to find much more space as the home side fell apart. With ten minutes left, substitute Eddie Perrett fired home the fourth goal with a low drive, and then things just got worse, as Darren Edwards was shown a straight red card for an elbow offence.
Seeing out the last few minutes with ten men, Mangotsfield conceded a fifth, as Herbert grabbed his second as he raced on to a ball over the defence and coolly chipped Steve Phillips. 0-5.
Certainly not the result that Manager David Mehew was looking for on opening day, especially with a Tuesday evening journey to Taunton Town looming, but it must be said, that Salisbury certainly lived up to their fans’ expectations, and will be in the mix come April!
