Victory at Meadowbank
Match Report by Ron Loftus
Evo-Stik League, Division One South & West Tuesday 4th April 2017
Shortwood Utd….0 Mangotsfield United….1 Att. 66 Meadowbank, Nailsworth
Following the poor result and performance at Taunton the previous Saturday and with injuries and illness forcing his hand, boss David ‘Boris’ Mehew made several alterations to the starting line-up at Shortwood on Tuesday evening. Ryan Batten, George Lloyd and Joe Hillard all started with Scott Brice and Mitch Tippins joining Tom Fry,Lew Powell and Caman Harvey on the bench.
On a hard and bouncy playing surface with a gusty wind blowing around the picturesque Cotswold home of our hosts, early exchanges were fairly even with both sides looking to get forward but neither goalkeeper being seriously tested. The ‘ Field had a let-off after 24 mins. however when a long ball over the defence held up in the wind and the advancing Steve Phillips was caught in no-mans land as an attempted lob by Shortwood’s Morford went wide of the target. Soon after, Phillips was called into action again when a header from a free-kick on the left had to be pushed around his left-hand post to safety. Some neat interchange of passing down the right-hand channel saw George Lloyd through on goal after 35 mins. but ‘ keeper Langley advanced quickly to block his on-target goal attempt. As the half-time interval approached, Lewis Powell did well to control an awkwardly bouncing forward pass and evaded centre-back Weeks to bear down on goal. The giant No. 4 then hauled the ‘ Field striker back and earned himself a straight red card. Unfortunately the resultant free-kick came to nothing leaving the scoreline blank at the end of 45 mins.
With a man advantage, Mangotsfield dominated second-half possession but still failed to create much in the way of clear-cut chances. Second-half substitute Mitch Tippins came close after 77 mins. cutting in from the right and beating two players before firing a powerful left-foot shot that clipped the top of the bar before going over. With a little under ten minutes to go, Matt Groves swung in a perfectly placed free-kick from the left and as Joe Hillard challenged for the header it fell to the predatory LEWIS POWELL who fired into the roof of the net from the edge of the 6-yard box. (1-0). Despite lengthy stoppage and injury time, the game ended with no further addition to the scoreline.
Despite being a far from convincing performance, the three points gained moved the ‘ Field back up to 6th. in the table and with just two weeks of the normal season remaining, still in contention, mathmatically at least, for a place in the end-of-season Play-Offs.
