'Super' Marine crush 'The Field'
Match Report by Ron Loftus
Evo-Stik League, Division One South & West Tuesday 14th March 2017
Swindon Supermarine…5 Mangotsfield United….0 Att. 139 Webbs Wood Stadium
The confidence-sapping result and performance against basement side Wantage the previous Saturday was plainly in evidence again at the Webbswood Stadium on Tuesday night against a rampant Swindon Supermarine intent on claiming a Play-off slot next month. In fact, the home side’s stand-in Reserve goalkeeper, Curtis Meare , wasn’t required to make a single save throughout the entire 90 mins.!
The warning signs were clear to see from the outset as the energetic home team’s front-line continually outpaced the pedestrian ‘Field defence causing the concession of a number of free-kicks as the visitors struggled to stem the tide. It was from one such free-kick after 12mins. that Supermarine centre-back, Taylor, was allowed a free-header past a static Steve Phillips to put the home side ahead (0-1).
28 mins. in and a cross from the left was collected by Callum Parsons on the edge of the area who turned and fired a shot which was deflected past Phillips to put the hosts further ahead(0-2).
As the half drew to a close the ‘Field’s frustrations were increased by bookings for both Mitch Tippins and Matt Groves as, thankfully, the first 45 mins. ended without further goals being conceded.
It took only 4mins. of the second half for the home side to increase their advantage when a cross from the right was met by the unmarked Josh Parsons whose header comfortably beat Phillips (0-3).
Over the ensuing 10-15 mins. the ‘Field management made a raft of substitutions with very little change in fortune.
In fact, by now, both Manager and Assistant were issuing instructions from behind the
barrier having been ordered from the dug-out by match Referee Dale Wotton. Dale Evans was the next ‘Field player to feel the wrath of the Referee and two yellow cards in the space of three minutes saw
the side reduced to 10 men with still 15mins. to play.
Almost inevitably the Swindon team capitalised on the situation and a brilliantly flighted free-kick from Callum Parsons flew over the wall and into the
top right-hand corner giving Phillips no chance after 76mins. (0-4). Former Mangotsfield striker Connor Waldon, a second half substitute for Supermarine, rubbed salt into the wounds after 88mins. when
cutting in from the left and beating Phillips far too easily with a low shot inside the ‘keepers near post (0-5).
A bad day at the office - I should say so !!!
