A disappointing end to the campaign for Mangotsfield as a lively and more determined Didcot Town side, deservedly took the points. There was a welcome return for Jack Harris, who has missed a large part of the campaign.

‘The Field’ rarely troubled Didcot keeper Leigh Bedwell in the first half, and Didcot’s Sam Barder was always giving the home defence much to ponder on. Early on, Adam Learoyd saw his header just clear the bar and Ben Whitehead’s volley from distance was not too far away.

George Reid then gave the home defence a scare with a low shot across the face of the goal, before the visitors took a 26th minute lead. Ben Whitehead took a neat pass from James Organ and turned to fire past keeper Steve Phillips from 10 yards. 0-1.

‘The Field’ made little headway and just before the break a speculative Lewis Powell volley from 25yards sailed way over the top.

HT. 0-1

Clearly, Mangotsfield needed to raise their game, but apart from a snap shot from Mitch Tippins, it was Didcot who looked dangerous. Sam Barder created a great chance as he slid the ball across the face of the goal but an onrushing forward just failed to connect.

Steve Phillips saved from Barder before George Reid scooped an effort over the top from 6 yards. However, he made amends in the 69th minute when his volley from 10 yards took a slight deflection to deceive Steve Phillips. 0-2

Moments later, Callum McNish sent a rasping drive against the crossbar, but in the 75th minute, ‘The Field’ pulled a goal back from substitute Matt Groves, as he swept home a cross from the right. 1-2

Just four minutes later, the predatory Lewis Powell flicked home a header at the far post, and it looked as though the hosts would salvage what had seemed an unlikely point. 2-2

However disaster struck with five minutes left. A long ball over the top of the Mangotsfield defence saw Steve Phillips rush out of his area, but found he had to try and head the ball clear. However, the ball dropped to Ben Whitehead and he had a very simple chance to net a third for Didcot. 2-3

Not the campaign ending that Mangotsfield were looking for!
