Match report by Ron Loftus
Evo-Stik League, Division One South & West Monday 17th April 2017
Bishops Cleeve AFC….2 Mangotsfield United….2 Att. 67 Kayte Lane, Bishops Cleeve
This end-of-season game provided plenty of entertainment - if you were a neutral - otherwise it had you wanting to tear your hair ( – or what’s left of it - ) out !! Played on yet another hard and bouncy pitch, injuries and suspensions meant that Tom Fry, Caman Harvey, Joe Hillard and Lew G. Powell all had places in the starting line-up for the ‘ Field. On 6 mins. our hosts took an early lead when Steve Phillips uncharacteristically missed a corner from the right leaving Aaron Drake an easy chance to score into the bottom corner.(0-1).
This seemed to act as a ‘ wake-up ‘ call for the visitors although it did appear that one or two individuals were already sitting on the beach in warmer climes somewhere ! However, after 20 mins. the equaliser arrived when a Dale Evans corner from the right reached Lewis Powell just inside the left-hand corner of the penalty-area. His powerful strike towards goal was deflected into the roof of the net by
the head of name-sake Lew G. Powell to bring the scores level. (1-1). Soon after, Lewis Powell tried his luck from distance but stand-in home ‘keeper, Kirk Layton, just managed to get fingertips to the ball to divert it over the bar. On 39 mins. our hosts came close to reclaiming the lead when a deep free-kick from the left was met at the back post by an attacker whose header slid just past Steve Phillips’ left-hand post. Two minutes later, a Dale Evans free-kick from the left was met by Lewis Powell whose powerful header beat goalkeeper Layton but bounced down off the underside of the crossbar onto the line before being cleared. H.T. 1-1.
The game continued to ebb and flow during the second period with Mangotsfield enjoying the greater possession but always looking vulnerable at the back when Bishops Cleeve broke quickly down either flank. On 55 mins. a mistake by Tom Fry let in the dangerous Jacob Davidge but Phillips did well to save with his legs as the diminutive Bishops Cleeve striker looked certain to score. As we moved into the final quarter of the game both sides looked capable of securing a winner. The ever-industrious Liam Monelle chased a long ball over the top of the home defence before bravely heading over the rapidly advancing Layton from 20 yards out only to see the goal-attempt bounce agonisingly past the post. It was almost inevitable with just 10 mins. to go when yet another quick home side counter- attack left the ‘ Field short at the back and Cleeve substitute, Jack Watts, had the easiest of chances to slot the ball low past Phillips.(1-2). To their credit, the ‘ Field kept going and earned their reward on 86 mins. when a short-corner from the left was played to Liam Monelle who got past two defenders on the bye-line before pulling the ball back to Lewis Powell who side-footed home at the near post.(2-2).
Probably a fair result come the end and this result keeps the ‘ Field in 8th.place in the table with just the home game on the 22nd. April against Didcot to come.
