Match Report by Bob Smale

Mangotsfield United….1 Salisbury FC….3
It proved a difficult afternoon for Mangotsfield against play-off bound Salisbury FC, and whilst the hosts were level at the break, The ‘Whites’ dominated the second period with neat interplay and incisive football. Mangotsfield opened brightly with Matt Groves scuffing a chance wide and Lewis Hogg releasing Conor McCormack down the right, only for his deep cross to be well held by keeper Alex Bass.
Salisbury’s crisp play soon became apparent. Justin Bennett had the ball in the net with a superb volley, only to be denied by the Assistant’s flag. Taurean Roberts’ low drive was held by Steve Phillips, and Roberts was again involved through his tricky wingplay.
Matt Groves created a good opportunity for Lewis Hogg, but the midfielder’s effort sailed well over the top, but, in the 37th minute, Salisbury took the lead as Tommy Wright fired home a volley from 6 yards. 0-1.
Elliot Wheeler went close with a header but almost on the stroke of half-time, Mangotsfield levelled through Ryan Batten, as he powered home a header from close-range.
HT: Mangotsfield Utd 1-1 Salisbury FC
Directly from the re-start, ‘The Whites’ took a hold on midfield and the hosts were under pressure. Both Tommy Wright & Justin Bennett saw headers just clear the far post and things were getting a little heated as the hosts found themselves on the back foot. In the 63rd minute however, disaster struck as Conor McCormack, running back towards his own goal, desperately tried to head an inswinging cross away from danger, but only succeeded in planting the ball well beyond Steve Phillips and into the far corner.
A good run and centre from Taurean Roberts saw Lewis Benson send a header over the top and a dangerous looking run into the box by Tommy Wright, was thwarted by the outrushing Steve Phillips.
Justin Bennett sealed the points in the 77th minute with a close-range third goal, and with the points looking safe, Salisbury introduced their three substitutes within a three minute spell. As the game entered the final minutes, Ryan Batten received a second caution and was sent off. From the resulting 20 yard free-kick, Steve Phillips did well to push the effort over the top. 1-3.
With the hosts now down to ten men, there was still two good opportunities for Salisbury to increase their lead, from an inswinging corner and a fierce drive from George Colson.
