Defeat at Jubilee Stadium crushes slim play-off hopes
Match Report by Ron Loftus
Evo-Stik League, Division One South & West Saturday 8th April 2017
Evesham Utd….1 Mangotsfield United….0 Att. 282 Jubilee Stadium
Under clear blue skies and with the temperatures soaring into the twenties the ‘ Field's outside chances of making the end-of-season Play-Offs were virtually ended by an industrious Evesham side who would now have to suffer a dramatic slump in form over the final three league fixtures to lose out on the Play-Offs themselves.
Although looking more threatening straight from the off, the home side nearly paid the price when L.G.Powell battled well to win the ball just inside the Evesham half before crossing from the right where Liam Monelle climbed well to send a header just wide of Kevin Sawyer’s right hand post. However on 11 mins ,a fatal lapse in concentration at the back saw Jordan Bryan allowed a free header from a Paul Fahy cross and he gave Steve Phillips no chance as he put the home side ahead (0 –1). Only a double save from Phillips prevented Ashley Williams from extending the Worcestershire’s side lead following a corner and a succession of corners saw another header bounce clear off the Mangotsfield crossbar as the half-time interval arrived with the ‘Field somehow only one goal in arrears.
H.T. : 0-1
Evesham started the second period strongly but were unable to increase their advantage and the ‘Field slowly began to come more into the game. After 69 mins a delightful inswinging cross from Matt Groves on the right saw Tom Warren arriving late at the back-post but his stretching finish just failed to find the target. With 10 mins to go another Groves cross just eluded centre-back Liam Harding but Monelle's shot was gathered by Sawyer at the foot of the near-post. In this incident, Harding landed awkwardly and suffered what is thought to be a broken leg. All at Mangotsfield wish the Centreback a swift and complete recovery in the fullness of time. Thereafter the home team were able to contain the sporadic Mangotsfield attacks and see the game to its conclusion without too many alarms.
Although STILL not mathematically certain, it appears virtually inevitable that the ‘Field will miss out on the Play-Offs and have to settle for a final position around 6th-8th in the league table. An improvement on last season and with the amount of injuries suffered even before the league programme commenced in August, perhaps the best that could have been expected.
