Mangos hit for six!!
Match Report by Ron Loftus
Evo-Stik League, Division One South & West Saturday 1st April 2017
Taunton Town…6 Mangotsfield United….1 Att. 549 The Viridor Stadium, Wordsworth Drive
This April Fool’s Day was no laughing matter for the ‘ Field where the weather - brief, bright spells interspersed with some heavy, frequent showers - pretty much mirrored the nature of the game at Wordsworth Drive. Mangotsfield made a positive start, however, when a cross from the left found Lewis Hogg in space on the edge of the hosts penalty area and his powerful shot was pushed wide of the post by home ‘keeper Irish going low to his right.
The warning signs soon became evident after just 5mins. however when Taunton’s right wing-back, Pierce Mitchell, a constant thorn in the side of the ‘Field rearguard all afternoon, put in a dangerous cross from the right which was flicked just wide of Steve Phillips’ right – hand post by Craig Veal. The pressure was building from the home side and two goals within the space of a minute set the tone for what was a torrid conclusion to the first half for the visitors. Firstly, after 24mins. a powerful free-kick from wide on the right by Staley was met perfectly by Lewis Hogg whose flashing header flew into Phillips’top left-hand corner to put Taunton ahead.(0-1). Just a minute later a corner from the right by Staley was flicked on in the box to the back post where Mitchell had the easiest of tasks to stab home and give the Peacocks a deserved two goal advantage.(0-2). As the interval approached, Rogers evaded several tackles out by the left-hand touchline before slipping the ball through to Ben Palmer who slotted home
at the near post.(0-3). The game was virtually over after 44mins. when a Staley corner from the right glanced off of Lewis Hogg’s head into the far corner – incredibly his second headed own goal of the afternoon - to give Taunton an unassailable four goal lead at half-time. (0-4).
When Staley got free down the left after 55mins. and pulled the ball back to the edge of the area for Chamberlain to side-foot home the fear grew that this defeat could reach epedemic proportions ! (0-5).
However, the introduction of substitutes Joe Hillard and George Lloyd seemed to give the ‘Field a lift and the visitors enjoyed their best spell of the game in the final 20mins. With new loan-signing - the ‘other’ Lewis Powell - (now to be known as 'Lew') also having joined the fray at the half-time interval, Mangotsfield began to see more of the ball. On 69mins. a Matt Groves corner from the left was played to the edge of the Taunton penalty area where Lewis Hogg’s powerful first-time volley was directed into the home goal from the head of the ‘original’ Lewis Powell ! (1-5). Incredibly, the ‘Field could have added to their tally within the next 10mins. when low strikes from both Lewis Powells forced home custodian Irish into diving saves and then after 75mins. another corner from Groves was met perfectly by George Lloyd some 25 yards out whose powerful volley beat Irish all ends up but crashed back into play off the crossbar.
The afternoons final action of note came in the 89th.minute when Taunton’s Ben Palmer’s mis-hit shot from the left saw Duff arriving unnoticed at the back post to score into the roof of the net.(1-6). The gulf between the two sides was painfully obvious as the home team looked to secure runners-up spot behind Champions Hereford and earn themselves a home tie in the end-of-season Play-Offs whilst Boris’ shell-shocked troops must gather themselves for the final run-in to the season.
