Lewis Powell scores 100th goal

Saturday 25th March 2017, Evo-Stik League, Div One South/West Attendance 115

Mangotsfield United….6 Bridgwater Town….0

Lewis Powell truly enjoyed a ‘Field Day’, as he scored his 100th goal for the club and recorded a 4-goal haul for the second time in the Maroon & Sky. A young Bridgwater side, struggling at the foot of the table, never seriously troubled Mangos keeper Steve Phillips all afternoon.

‘The Field’ started brightly with Powell, Scott Brice and Mitch Tippins all trying their luck, without success, before Powell opened the scoring in the 20th minute. 1-0

Three minutes later, following a jinking run into the box, Liam Monelle was brought down and Powell put the spot-kick away. 2-0.

What would have been the best ‘goal’ of the game, came in the 38th minute when Powell’s searing volley from 25 yards crashed against the crossbar and bounced down over the line before rising and hitting the bar a second time. Both referee and Assistant ruled play on!

HT: 2-0

Within 46 seconds of the second-half starting, Matt Groves made it 3-0 with a low drive across the face of the goal and into the far corner. 3-0.

In the 51st minute, a clever run by Liam Monelle saw him draw Bridgwater’s keeper Liam Kingston, and slide the ball across to Powell, who tapped home number four, and his hat-trick. 4-0.

Bridgwater’s only real chance of the afternoon came in the 77th minute when Tom Richens lofted the ball over the top from close range.

Powell, then added Mangotsfield 5th in the 84th minute, 5-0, and with the game edging in to stoppage time, Joe Hillard ran on to a long through ball and chipped it over the advancing Kingston. 6-0.
