MANGOTSFIELD UNITED 0 – 0 WANTAGE TOWN
Mangos forced to settle for draw in a fustrating game for Boris and his men.
11th March, 2017
The opening couple minutes saw a moment of superb intelligence by loane Jay Malpas on the edge of the visitors’ box. The midfielder dinked a sly ball with the outside of his foot inviting Matt Groves to get into second gear as he raced towards goal, but could only fire over.
Just moments later, following a cynical challenge via Callum Pearce as Liam Monelle went through, it was Ryan Batten’s chance again to show his ‘tekkers’ in a dead-ball scenario. However, the strike from the big-man took a brave block off a green and white shirt. The resulting corner saw another strike from Grovsey sail just wide of the post from range.
Despite a great start from Boris’ men, it was Steven Phillips who needed to make sure that a Mark Francis free-kick stayed out midway through the half.
The best spell of the game came on 29-minutes as Batten gifted possession to Francis who countered and twice had a golden opportunity to open the scoring. A fantastic block by skipper Scott Brice and then an even better intervention by Phillips with cat-like reflexes to keep out the second attempt.
On 37-minuntes, the Dough Hillard Sports Stadium thought they had seen Lewis Powell’s 100th competitive goal for the club. With Groves and Powell mustering up a better combination than spaghetti and bolognaise inside the box, the eventual effort on goal seemed too feeble to be worrying Eddie Cavanagh.

A great move by the hosts began with Connor McCormack winning possession and saw more fine link-up play between Groves and Powell. The chance eventually came to Liam Monelle who could only spoon the chance at hand drifting well wide falling onto his back.
Dale Evans’ took it upon himself to test Cavanagh from a dead-ball and was unlucky to see it saved as it dipped approaching the top-left corner.
From then onwards, it was constant Mangos pressure as they looked for the breakthrough. The ball was teed up for McCormack to strike from the corner of the box and just flashed the shot wide.
Almost form nothing, it was almost the visitors who snatched the lead as Todd Hathaway found himself one versus one, fortunately, it was Phillips who got his body in the way and Hathaway was forced to settle for the corner.
McCormack so very nearly had a moment he would never forget. Similar position to his previous strike, this time 5-yards further out but only roughly 5-inches from the top-corner, courtesy of a deflection.
Despite a late rally of pressure from the Mangos, it was the men in green and white who stood tall and grinded out the point.
